Welcome to Saab92x.com!

I wore my rear pads all the way through, so rather than having the rotors turned I decided to do the H6 upgrade. I don't think we've got a very comprehensive guide to this upgrade on this forum. Obviously you can find it on other forums, but I took pics so I might as well post a how-to.
I went the cheap route using Autozone rotors.
Parts purchased from subarugenuineparts.com:
EBC Red Stuff Rear Pads
Subaru H6 Brackets
Clips for H6 Brackets
Parts purchased from Autozone:
Autozone Rotors - (PN: 31273)
The install took about 1 hour.
Once the wheel is off the only tools required were:
14 mm Socket
Drill with large drill bit
C-Clamp to compress caliper
Vehicle jack
I did use some M8 bolts to pop the old rotors off. Make sure your parking brake is disengaged.
I jacked the car on the rear diff. Lift the car however you're comfortable.

Remove wheel.
Remove brake caliper (two bolts that require 14mm socket).
Remove stock bracket (two bolts that require 14mm socket).
Remove rotor using two M8 bolts.
Drill out spot welds.
Pull off dust shield.
Install new rotor.
Swap slides to new bracket, use brake grease on slides. Install new clips.
Install new pads.
Use c-clamp to compress caliper (cap on brake fluid resevoir needs to be removed). Reinstall.
Put wheel back on.

yep, worthwhile upgrade. good simple writeup. sometimes those rotors can be a pain, especially if you dont use the bolts to get em off, thats the secret.

A very easy and worth while upgrade. You should really upgrade the front rotors at the same time to keep the ABS from getting confused (or so I've heard).\
Are you talking size wise? If so, would we see any benefit from the front LGT brakes? Are they bigger? And would they fit, along with the H6 rear kit, under our 16" stockers? I could always use more braking power.

removing the dust shield > bending it back.
in case anyone is wondering how you locate the spotwelds to drill, you can see the little marks where the dustshield is tack welded on. it's very easy to remove.

Yeah now that you mention it my rear rotors have been very slightly grinding up against my dust shield since the last time I changed the rear rotors/pads. It's kind of a "shhhhhhhhhhhh" sound when I turn a sharp corner. Really makes me want to just take them off.

Love the wheels.

I removed the dust shield in the rear when I did the upgrade. I've got larger than stock (for a Linear) rotors in the front as well, but that only brings them to Aero size. Regardless, they all work with the 16" wheels. Would LGT fronts? I dunno.

I'm thinking about doing this upgrade the next time i change out my pads...how are the m8 bolts used to take off the old rotors?

There are threaded holes in the rotors. You insert the M8 bolts into these holes, and the tip of the bolt passes through the rotor, and hits the hub on the other side. As you tighten the bolts, the tip of the bolt pushes against the hub, and it forces the rotor off the hub.
See page BR-18 from the factory service manual...

It's a good idea to blow the holes out with compressed air and give them a squirt of liquid wrench or wd-40 as well. They're usually filled with road grime and debris that makes it difficult to thread the bolts in.

And make sure that the parking brake is not on...that took me about 20 minutes of cussing to figure out. Sheese.

Are the slides the things on either side with the black rubber boots? - Noob question I know

Yes - these are the caliper slide pins. The rubber boots hold them in place, and they are typically the culprit in a "seized" caliper.

Thanks man, you seem to have a good amount of knowledge. I think I may disassemble my current calipers and try to "un-seize" them before getting new ones.

What year H6 is this upgrade coming from? The 2nd newest Legacy/Outback generation (2005-2009) or the 1999-2004?

Dunno...
Just researching at this point.... my rear brakes should be good for a while longer. The fronts are my priority right now. But since we are talking about it, whats the difference?

Oh you meant the ones in the write-up.

Sweet. AutoZone sells the H6 caliper brackets for less than $30 each.

If you are getting everything, and want e-coated rotors, the KNS kit with Centric Premium rotors is a better deal, even incl shipping

is the h6 bracket the same one on rockauto.com for 13.77...?
cardone, p/n 141605

^^ That is the part number I found as well. My local Napa has them for just under $21 each.

I thought krazykarguy was asking me what year I was going to source my rear brakes from and then I realized he was asking you. Hence "
