Welcome to Saab92x.com!

It's official, my car is burning oil.
I've been running Amsoil ASL 5w-30 for the past 30K miles and I tend to check it religiously, every other morning or so. This past week I've been careless (and drove hard too) and checked it tonight. Oil was slightly above the L marking on the dipstick, would I have suffered oil starvation tomorrow night driving home from school? Probably not, but still scary. BTW, the car has 49,3xx miles and oil change last performed at 45K. I never let my level get that low.
And my stock of Amsoil ASL 5w-30 will be just about done after this upcoming oil change in less than a 1,000 miles. If I'm burning oil, I wonder if I should make a switch to something more economical?

LOL you make me laff euro. ZOMG slightly above Low ZOMG. Going from the F to slightly above the L in ~4,300 miles is not that big a deal. Or maybe I'm wrong IDK.

It's been topped off twice though in those 4,300 miles, usually with half a quart. So I'm basically burning a 1.5 quart in 5,000 miles. That doesn't sound good to me.

Well say that in the OP damn. I'm going thru about .5 qts per 5,000 miles and have been for awhile. 73k currently.

I'll not burn a drop for 4K and then burn a whole quart in 1K. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

I burn about the same as you seem to have Euro. My mechanic says it's not uncommon, so I just have to keep checking and topping off. After switching to Rotella Synth 5W-40 its gotten a bit better, so maybe give it a shot. Wal-Mart carries it and it's not too expensive.

This.
Personally I don't think the dipstick on the WRX/Aero is ever accurate. The level seems to go up and down on it's own will. Just change it on regular intervals and you shouldn't have to worry. Though it's a fact that eventually every turbo'd Subaru throws a rod/spins a bearing at some point or another.

I agree with this as well.
My car burns about 1.5-2 quarts every 3k miles. you just need to keep an eye on it euro, which you are. I find that if i let my car warm up before i drive it in the cold it burns less.
I would attribute yours and drivin west's consumption to the break down of the oil. This is yet another reason to change the oil more frequently. 3k miles or so is when i change mine. yeah its more wasteful but i can't go buy motors as frequently as oil changes.

Euro, to answer your question. If you car was slightly above the L mark you probably had somewhere between 4-4.5 qts still in it. Plenty of oil still in it, and nothing scary at all. Welcome to the world of Subaru motors!

I would add that sometimes my dipstick reads that same thing.. then i park it in a different spot and check again and its all good.... go figure.

Ya, our dipsticks suck Jimmy!

Subaru's dipsticks should be called dipshits. They are the most position sensitive "measuring" tools I've ever seen. I only check my oil in one specific spot in my driveway (it's gravel) which I referenced to a verified level poured cement slab. Otherwise, it's a sort of why bother/well the oil is somewhere on the dipstick type of thing. Recheck your level after an overnight park in a KNOWN good location. All other measures seem meaningless.

I do ridiculously short change intervals of German Castrol: I've changed the oil three times in the 11K miles I've owned it (granted, once was because of a new turbo). UOA says the oil is still good.

HAH! Despite the fact that I'm a passionate defender of Mobil 1, I'll admit that I'm constantly adding oil. I can burn a quart of it in 1k, or not burn a drop in 3k... no pattern really.

Why not get an AOS?

Make sure you dont have any leaks either. My car has a bad habit of weaping oil from the drain plug because the oil temp sensor dis not come with a proper crush washer. I would just keep checking the oil and refill whenever you need.

change the crush washer when you change the oil. I do.

yeah.. i remember reading that somewhere.. jumped to conclusion. In any event, whether its blow-by vapor or some other phenomenon, the car consumes oil.

Yeah, seems to be at a pretty modest rate, however. I add WAY less than most people: maybe 1/2 a quart every 3K - on average at least.
I also have a seeping cam cover gasket but I've never seen it on the ground (very common). Surely a tad comes out that way.

I add nothing at all between 5K oil changes, whether I'm using Pennzoil Plat (which I tend to 'cuz it's cheap) or M1. AND I have no consumption btw changes. The key thing I do is check consistently with the car on either the level or the same exact parking spot every time (which out of habit more than necessity is every week, it's part of the engineering geek in me).

try checking the oil level on a 3.5l nissan! compared to that, subaru's are 10000000000% accurate

I agree with this. The dipstick on the Maxima is even worse.
And I always check my oil in the same place, in the garage after it's been sitting over night or more.

The breather gasket or whatever it's called? Yeah, I have that problem as well.
Also the pipes connecting the TMIC by the TB and underneath the TMIC is quite filthy (oily film) as well. With the 60K service, I'll request a cleaning of the TB and the surrounding area as the TMIC will be coming off anyway for a pitch mount stop install.
