All I'll say from owning a VW for almost 5 years is to plan on spending a lot of money on it if it starts going downhill....
Just for a coolant hose for one of those things could cost close to $200 bucks...

eh I saw it. Just figured i'd put in my 2 cents if anyone else happened upon it someday thinking about getting a MKIV VW that's no more reliable that a model car.

I personally have had 2 vw with low miles. The first was a jetta and it was a piece of junk. Once a month it spent in the dealer (good thing for the warranty). At 80k miles it died. The 2nd was a passat vr6. Never dogged the car and at 76k miles while driving one day, the engine blew, out of know where. Oil was good, fluids too. All was as it was suppose to be and the stupid thing just decided o die. This is when I said never again with a vw. I hav a freind who has a gti and had to have the engine replaced at 32k miles. I am not sure if someone will not like the following statement, but to me vw are a piece of crap, worthless waste of metal and material. I have seen old hyundais last more than those crappy vw. I have always driven Japanese and never ever have a problem until I drove a vw. I lost track of how many times those two pieces of junk left me stranded on the road.
I don't know but I must have gotten 2 lemons in row.
Either way, my
has 173k miles and drives real nice. Heck I had a 2001 Acura tl with 205k miles that never gave me any problems.
Stay with the
in my opinion.

The R32 is a very nice car, but in a straight line, a Stage II Saabaru (as will a Stage I or II GTI from a roll) will mop the road with one. They are over priced and underpowered (for their price point).
If you don't mind the unrefined nature of the Saabaru, it has a lot going for it over the GTI - mainly the price, AWD and likely better reliability. Also the fact that the Saabaru is so rare, to me that is a nice "feature".
If you do a lot of driving the GTI is a more friendly place to be (beat you up less, be quieter and be more refined), has a lot less lag/more low end and will get significantly better mpg - especially on the highway. It is a nicer car.
One big concern with the Saabaru is with sun bearings. It seems most people have issues when they don't keep enough oil in the engine (seems stupid... but it happens way more than it should)... but a lot of Saabarus over the years have had issues with this. Other than that issue, they in general have proven to be rock solid when it comes to reliability.
I have never had a problem with mine other than a few burnt out tail lights and a bad CV boot.
Seach around on here and you will find sevearl informatin packed posted with people who have owned both (at the same time even) and their honest opinions. I haven't been on here much recently... not sure if the posters are still on here... but here is a start:

One irritating complaint I've had probably only applies to Salt Belt owners. Minor fasteners break with alarming frequency. Makes getting familiar with screw extractors and/or Time-Serts irritatingly frequent. As an example I just broke my snorkus bolts when changing the rad hoses. This issue was confirmed by a number of STi and even 08 WRX owners at a local SCCA meeting. This has never been an issue for me with the various VAG products I('ve) own(ed) or associate with. Sure, they may freeze, but I never have to make a trip to the hardware store as a result of a simple job.

Funny - I've had the exact opposite experience - I live in a very salty area, and have only broken one bolt on the Saab. It was my own damned fault as I over-tightened it and it snapped off.
