Welcome to Saab92x.com!

I found this one on Craigslist in Michigan. I have been looking for one for years. The guy wants $1500 for it and I can have it street legal in NY for another $1000. So I am calling the guy tonight to see if it is still available. If so I will be making a weekend road trip Aug 13th. I am so stoked and really want this one. Been a dream since I was a kid

Front brakes, e-brake, turn signals, head and tail lights, windshield and wiper, wiper does not have to be motorized just functional.

Nice! I've always wanted to build a sandrail.

I dont have the time or place to build one. So a cheap that needs a little work is right up my alley. I have a co worker that is working on one also. He is going to join me on the road trip to pick it up. I will leave it at his place and we will get her up to snuff there. I can't wait for 6 tonight so I can call this guy and hope its still available I keep checking the craigslist add and its still active. I may still have a chance at it.

Definitely not out of the question. I have heard there are some fairly cheap, VW engine upgrades that will give it more HP than I will ever need.

I just got off the phone with the guy and it is all mine. I will be driving to Michigan the weekend of the 20th to pick it up.

Realistically I will likely never build one. I'd probably take the route you're going and get one cheap and fix it up. Can't wait to see the pics and congrats on the buy.

I'd want one. I would love to swap in a EJ22 N/A in there and go onnnn fun wow
Nice find, get it and make it happy!

As of now I know that the tires and wheels will be replaced along with adding front brakes. I have contacted some people about getting a canvas top made for it. I will be adding some kick ass head lights and a light bar on top. Next year it will be painted a metallic grey. As I get money more and more chrome bits will be added also.

Nice! I've always wanted one too. Excited to see the build.

I've always wanted one of these.

There are a bunch for sale. Prices range from 3k to 10k depending on location, engine size and quality of work. The price was perfect for me on this one and I can still build it any way I want on a small budget.

supertrapp pipe ftw. I bet it sounds good.

Used to have a ton of fun up at the Sleeping Bear Dunes in a buggy of this nature.

I received more pictures of the buggy last night and started brainstorming what needs to be modified to make it unique and all mine. Here are a list of things off the top of my head. As you can see the whole thing has been painted red, that will have to change. I am thinking a metallic gray or midnight blue with black accenting pieces. All wiring will be updated and run through the piping of the frame. Lights and signals will be replaced and modernized. I don't have a picture of the gas tank but that will be replaced also.
The quality and size of the pictures suck because they were sent to me through text.
Rear brakes will be updated to disks with e-brake. Front disk brakes will be added. Rear wheels and tires will be replaced with something much wider. Front tires and wheels will also be a normal to wide size. I am not a fan of the motorcycle wheel in the front.
The center console will be removed and replaced with 2 or 3 solo pod mounted gauges. Either right at the bottom or top of the windshield. I know I will have speedometer and gas gauges, I am still undecided on rpm
As you can see the exhaust is a rusted nasty mess and needs to be replaced. I am not a fan of constantly having to clean and polish chrome but I may have to bite the bullet here and go with it.

It currently has a mesh floor board and I am on the the fence whether I want to keep that or not. The guy helping with rebuild really wants the mesh floor on his. So I may remove it and give it to him and go with a solid floor.
This year I will add the front brakes and change the rears to disk. The Saab will be paid off in March or sooner. After that I will take out a small personal loan and throw everything at the buggy at once. That way I wont have to piece meal it together and I can have it on the road by next Summer. So far all the parts seem reasonable in price with not much over $400. Its just there are a lot of parts that need to be replaced or updated. This is going to be a fun project to build my dream ride.

BTT - you get this!?

I heading out to pick it up this Sunday.

You have to drive that thing with the mesh floor at least once for the experience.

I will definitely drive it with the mesh floor for this year, which will be all off road. The guy that is helping me with this and building his own wants to convert his to the mesh floor when he makes his street legal. I will have to get a feel for it and decide what I want to do.

I've been so damn busy since I got promoted that I haven't had a chance to update.
Sunday 8/21 we left NY at 4am heading to Michigan. We thought we had the GPS set up to take us through Buffalo, into Ohio, then we ended up at the Canadian border
. I had an enhanced license but the driver didn't we explained our mistake and the border patrol let us in. The American patrol on the other side going into Michigan seemed surprised by this but let us back in the US without too much of a hassle. After 13 hours of driving, of which I did none
, we arrived at the sellers house in the middle of corn fields in Central Mi. When I talked to him on the phone he said that he did some work on the tranny and that's why it wont go into 3rd or 4th gears. When we were loading it he told me a different story. He was coming home on a back road with a buzz and fucked up going into 3rd and now it wont go into 3rd or 4th
. No big deal because these are easy enough to rebuild or replace.
We then drove 1.5 hours back east to Flint, Mi, where we harassed the bartender and waitresses at Hooters until 10:30 at night then stumbled back to the hotel. My buddy woke me up at 5am to get back on the road. Where again he drove the whole way. I did offer to drive but he didn't want to let go of the wheel, so he drove another 12 hours straight until we got home. All in all it cost me about $500 total to go pick it up, between gas, Hooters, and hotel.
As you can see the PO spray painted everything on the rail red. Pedals, shocks, bushings, there is no break up of the color at all. Once we got it home we found out that a slave cylinder is blown in the rear and a front wheel bearing is shot also. Again, no big deal because all of that will be replaced during the rebuild. Basically the only thing that will remain after the rebuild is the frame, motor, windshield, and steering linkage (maybe).
I have 6.5 more car payments to make, then I will take out a $3k loan and start throwing money at this. With hopes of having it street legal and looking bad ass by next summer.

I am currently scouring CL for VW bus parts. Trying to find some that need little to no work that can be reused. Suspension parts, brakes, stuff like that.

Could be hard to come by. Check the Samba too, they'll cost more, but should be easier to find. Also, www.jaxed.com is a good way to search multiple craigslists at once.
