Recall?

Saw this on a local Subaru board, anyone heard anything yet?

http://www.detnews.com/article/20110910 … 0-vehicles

Subaru said it was issuing two recalls covering about 400,000 recalls. One covers 300,000 vehicles sold or registered in 20 states —including Michigan, Ohio, New York —and Washington, D.C., to replace potentially rusty brackets on the underside of the vehicles. The recall covers the 2002-2007 Impreza, 2003-2008 Forester and 2005-2006 Saab 9-2x. Subaru said it had reviewed complaints of front lower control arms broken at hanger brackets due to corrosion caused by road salt. Dealers will inspect the front lower control arms and will rust-proof them or replace them with new ones. Owners will be notified by early November.

Re: Recall?

Since we officially have Saabs we'll have to see it they follow suit.  Given Saab's financial situation I sort of doubt they'll issue a voluntary recall.

What shocked me was that they mentioned the 9-2x. Maybe Subaru 'gets' that it's an impreza finally.

Re: Recall?

Went to the NHTSA website.  This isn't a voluntary recall, this is a safety recall so the manufacturer of the vehicle is responsible, not the seller.  This is Subaru recall number WVX-34, NHTSA Campaign ID Number 11V46400, and affects all 92x sold or currently registered in: MASSACHUSETTS, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MAINE, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW JERSEY, OHIO, RHODE ISLAND, WEST VIRGINIA AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.  (sorry about the caps, I copied it from the NHTSA website.)

My guess after reading a couple of the reports is that the control arms are breaking due to corrosion at the bracket where the sway bar attaches.  I know mine are as rusty as hell at that point.  I'm sure a nice coat of paint will fix it right up....

Re: Recall?

Entire subframe would be my guess as well, since the control arm is secured by that..  LOL

Re: Recall?

I'm waiting for this now, because i'm pretty sure this happened to mine as i had a clunking recently and we named this as the problem.  roxor for saving myself 230 from subaru or having to go pick apart one from a junkyard car

Re: Recall?

So what's the deal? Are we going to be getting notices from Saab in the mail or highly unlikely? All I know is my car is a rust bucket underneath. big_smile

Re: Recall?

According to the PDF, all 9-2x cars in the salt belt are affected. I am definitely going to inspect my front control arms when I change my oil this week.

Ironically, this is the same sort of recall that took place for my '01 Hyundai Elantra, and resulted in new, FREE front & rear subframes, and new front & rear control arms...

Funny, I remember a time where if your car rusted out, it was your problem, not the manufacturer... facepalm

Good question.  Fuji Heavy Industries USA is running the recall campaign for Fuji Heavy Industries, the actual manufacturer.  The report seem to indicate that Subaru will issue the recall notices, but it doesn't say for certain.

Description of the Manufacturer's Remedy Program
(i) The remedy plan calls for dealers to inspect corrosion degree of the front lower control arms. Dealers will either rust proof or replace both sides of the front lower control arms with new ones.
(ii) Subaru of America, Inc. expects to notify U.S. dealers around September 7, 2011. Subaru will start preparing modified parts. It is expected that owner notification will begin within 60 days. Subaru will update NHTSA if the situation changes significantly.

So if you see something in the mail from Subaru DON'T THROW IT OUT without taking a good look at it.

And what if your car got all rusted in an affected state but now lives in AZ? My guess is I'm hosed but maybe they will come through if its needed.
