Welcome to Saab92x.com!
Hi everyone, |
I still haven't received a letter. I did not fill out a change of ownership card either.

Well, my car passed the punch test and the LCA's got "gooped". I go to pick it up later today.

Tried to call the BBB hotline listed in the manual today at 6:30pm and immediately got a message that said thanks for calling, our office is closed, our normal business hours are M-F, 9am-7pm, goodbye..
Sweet, guys.

Those of you who got the rust proofing:
Did the arms look different on the outside after the job was done?
Did they look like something was applied on the outside?
Did they look shiny, black, etc, or just the same as before?
Offline

It depends on what dealership does it.
Both of my arms were marked with a yellow wax pen "x", and had the rustproofing applied to the inside of the "ears" of the LCA's. Otherwise, same as before.

I never filled out a change of ownership card since I bought my car in July of 2011 but I got the letter in the mail last month. I finally got around to stopping into the local Saab dealer today and was met with a bit of confusion.
The Saab tech at the dealership had never seen one of these letters before. Our dealer doesn't have the kit to perform the recall and he said they aren't allowed to order parts right now. Apparently there are only 3 9-2x's in my city and 1 in Rapid City, SD that he knows of so they're definitely not common, although I'm still surprised none of the others had brought their cars in.
He suggested I check with the local Subaru dealer. The Subaru dealer said they would be happy to do the work but I would need to have Saab reimburse them as Subaru won't pay them for it. He said he's done over 100 of these and only 2 needed control arm replacement but it's still a safety recall and it's got to be done somehow. Has anyone else been able to work with the Saab dealer and have them reimburse Subaru? Or is the Saab tech feeding me a line of crap when he says they can't order the kit?

Those of you who never got a letter or who encounter confusion:
Call the tel. # in the recall letter: 1-855-880-0808, the Saab customer assistance center (it's GM really).
They know of this recall.
They'll ask you for your VIN, your location, and they'll give you the name and contact info of the GM dealer nearest you who can do this recall.
Ask for the 3 closest GM dealers to you, just in case you have problems with one of them. Note that not all GM dealers do this, only a few.
Call up, make an appt. and get this thing done!
Offline
Had mine done ... They passed and they got the goop apparently. Was also a good reminder of why I don't like going to that particular dealership
- booked they appointment, asked about the recall said they were aware and no cars had failed yet. Asked for my VIN to confirm
- get to the dealer, drop the car off ask if I want any service done (no .. I'm here for the recall _only_ )
- get a phone call at work "Do you have a copy of the recall? We can't seem to find the VIN in the database" ... (what were you doing for the last 2 weeks then?)
I'm sure they would've tried to do more work, or bill me for the recall if I didn't have the letter to send to them. This isn't the first time I've had a not-so-good experience with them..
(hint: they're in the West end of the GTA)

I called and spoke with a GM representative for Saab. She/he (couldn't tell, honestly) was familiar with the recall, got my VIN and confirmed that it was listed in the safety recall for the control arms. I'll be getting a call back tomorrow after she/he makes some calls to GM/Saab dealers in the area to find out who the closest one who is equipped to do the recall is. I find it odd that they don't just have a searchable list, but whatever. I didn't have to fight or anything, which was a nice relief. She said the closest GM & Saab dealer to me is in Bangor, which is a little over 2 hours away, but she'll be calling some other Saab only dealers to see if there is one closer who is doing the recall service.
So, if you haven't gotten a letter but you know your car was/is registered in one of the affected states, call that number and the ball will get rolling.

Got mine done yesterday @ Legends Saab in Phoenix. I had to call GM and argue that my car should be covered by the check. It was a Boston car for 3-4 years so I contended that it should be covered. They finally got back to me and asked where I wanted to take it so they could send the tools to the dealer.
No replacement, just the goop. They also did the fuel tank recall from a couple years ago.

Fuel tank recall? Is that for '05 cars only? I didn't see any recalls other than the control arm one on recalls.gov.

Here's the tank recall info for Subaru- didn't want to search any deeper for the
specific letter.
Service Program WVL-22 (2005 - 2008 Forester or 2005 - 2007 Impreza with 2.5L non-turbo engine)
Dear Subaru Owner:
We would like to thank you for selecting a 2005 - 2008 Subaru Forester or 2005 - 2007 Impreza with a 2.5 Liter engine (non-Turbo). At Subaru, we take pride in our products and are committed to your continued satisfaction.
During a quality review, we discovered that the one-way fuel valve located in your vehicle’s fuel tank may not perform as intended and could cause a condition that may damage the catalytic converter. To prevent this condition, the one-way fuel valve must be permanently removed from the fuel tank. Removal of the valve will not adversely affect the performance of your vehicle because it has been determined this valve is unnecessary.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The one-way fuel valve is located at the base of a small sub-chamber contained in the fuel tank. When the tank’s fuel level drops below 1½ gallons, the sub-chamber is intended to provide a fuel reserve for the fuel pump during vehicle cornering. However, the one-way valve may inadvertently act in such a way as to prevent fuel from refilling the sub-chamber, failing to provide the intended reserve. If this were to happen, the fuel pump could momentarily draw air, causing the engine to experience a sporadic misfire condition resulting in possible damage to your vehicle’s catalytic converter. (The “Check Engine light will illuminate to alert you if the catalytic converter efficiency has degraded beyond an acceptable level and if your vehicle may be releasing air pollutants that exceed emission standards.)
WHAT WE ARE ASKING YOU TO DO PROMPTLY
You should immediately contact your Subaru dealer for an appointment to have your vehicle’s fuel tank one-way valve permanently removed. The approximate time to perform this repair is 30 minutes. However, it may be necessary for you to leave your vehicle for a longer period on the day of your scheduled appointment to allow your dealer flexibility in scheduling other appointments. Your Subaru dealer will perform this repair at no cost to you. Since it will be necessary for your dealer to remove the fuel pump from your vehicle’s fuel tank to access the one-way fuel valve, it would be helpful if the tank were less than half full at the time of service.
CALIFORNIA REGISTERED OWNERS
The California Air Resources Board requires that emission related campaigns be completed prior to California’s vehicle registration renewal process; without this repair, you will not be able to register your vehicle during your next annual registration. Upon completion of the services required by this campaign, your California dealer will complete and provide you a “Proof of Correction Certificate. If required, present the certificate to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (the “DMV ) when renewing your California registration as proof of campaign completion. If the DMV does not request the certificate, we recommend that you keep it for your records.
In addition, the State of California requires that every vehicle must pass an emission test (SMOG Check) every two years and before it is sold. Without the free service we are providing, your vehicle may be more likely to fail this test and require that you make costly repairs.
IF YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE
To locate the nearest Subaru dealer you can click here. You may also email us by clicking here or call us at 1-800-SUBARU3 (1-800-782-2783) during normal business hours for assistance. Please call us immediately if the dealer fails or is unable to complete this procedure free of charge. Your continued satisfaction with Subaru is important to us. This modification is intended to assure your vehicle’s optimal performance. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this matter may cause and urge you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to have this repair performed.
Note: You may be receiving this prior to a postal notification of this information. This is either because we have your email address on file or because you have registered to receive alerts through MySubaru.com. Please feel free to schedule an appointment with your Subaru dealer to have this repair performed even if you have not yet received your notification by mail.
Sincerely,
Subaru of America, Inc.

Thanks mkaz. NA engines only. Not for me
The GM customer service lady actually did call me back, and Saab of Portland has confirmed that they will do the recall service. Gonna make an appointment tomorrow. Anyone had the service done there?
Offline
I ended up calling in the morning and getting an appointment in the afternoon. Took about 45 minutes and I was on my way. They said they hadn't seen any failures yet. I'd recommend Portland Saab for the service. They got me in and out and didn't try to sell me anything in the process. Plus, free carwash.

In case you have not been tracking my adventures with my P2097 check engine light, please read the following from an e-mail I just received from the GM Emissions Compliance Group:
There is a Product Emission Recall planned for certain 2005-06 model year Saab 9-2X vehicles. My understanding is that the recall will be the same as conducted on the Subarus. The recall service procedure requires that a new fuel pump gasket be installed and General Motors did not have an adequate quantity of the service gaskets in stock, to be able to support launching of the recall as soon as Subaru. We anticipate that we will have enough gaskets to support the recall by the end of January.
Note that this is the WVL-22 volentary service recall and only applies to the Linear models.

I had mine done yesterday at Turpin - the defrocked GM dealership in Ottawa. No problems. They had yet to see any failures. Interestingly, they were billing a GM dealership in Montreal for the work.

Just got my lube job done at my local Subaru dealership as I didn't want to drive 300 km to get SAAB to do it. Subaru charged me $78 which seems fair.
As an aside they had the new BRZ in, wow that is SEX on wheels
According to the sales rep they are selling like hot cakes and will not have more stock until November.

Subaru Calgary charged me $125 yesterday for the recall inspection and to apply the rust inhibitor when it passed the punch test. Centaur Subaru never returned my email inquiry. Still, way better than 600km round trip to Edmonton.

Still no word from the dealership here. Guess I need to make some calls.

I am finally getting around to getting my car looked at. I tried my buddy at the local Subaru dealer and he put me in touch with only Saab service left in the area. I have an appt for Friday afternoon. Damn it I just had a ball joint replaced last week, I am not sure if could have been part of the recall.
Offline
I don't think it would be part of it. The rust issue, as far as I know, was with the control arm itself only.
Offline
The recall is only for the front lower control arms/transverse links.

Offline
I'm just now seeing this, my car was in MD/North VA up until last July, now its in TN, so I guess I will be SOL either way?
Offline
Has anybody had this recall service done recently? I just bought a 2005 Aero in black and saw the open recall on the carfax report.
I'm hoping my local GM dealership will be able to take care of it competently.
