Re: Recall?

How long would this process take?  The nearest Subi dealer isn't exactly what I would call close...

Based on the last time I took apart the front sub-frame and removed the lower control arms... two hours?

Re: Recall?

I wouldn't think that a subie dealer would handle a saab recall (technically its a saab recall for us...) ? or am I wrong?  What about a GM dealer?

I have a bunch of subie dealers near me... but I'm going to have to do some searching for a saab dealer.

Re: Recall?

http://www.insideline.com/subaru/imprez … oblem.html

Not sure if everyone has seen the above  arrow-up posted link from Edmunds regarding the recall. Just in case people missed it I thought I'd throw it up.

As the article states:

The recall involves 104,981 Subaru Imprezas, 179,795 Subaru Foresters and 10,347 Saab 9-2Xs. The 9-2X is an Impreza twin.

Subaru dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms and will either rust-proof or replace them. The recall is expected to begin in November. Owners can contact Subaru at (800) 782-2783.

Hope this answers some questions that people may have.

Re: Recall?

So, they are?

A) Painting the control arms.
B) Replacing the control arms with a new (same) unit with 2 coats of paint
C) Giving us aluminum control arms, bc Japan is swimming (tsunami pun intended) in  $$ right now

I can sand and POR-15 some stuff myself in 30 mins.  I'd do that over taking my car to a Saab dealer.

Re: Recall?

It's funny, the saab 92x manual calls not to rust proof because it may 'damage' the cars factory rust proofing and other components. However, now the dealer is offering rust proofing?
I can find the page if you guys are interested, but has anyone rust proofed their car here before? Im thinking of going ahead and doing it...

Re: Recall?

Wow, theres only 10,347 9-2x's in the whole USA.

That means if you own one; you own 0.001% of total 9-2x USA production.  (porportion! 1/10,347 .001%/100%)

I wonder how many are actually running ;_;

2005 Saab 9-2x Aero 4EAT <3 I loves it.  1 of 1,353 same models built in 05' super duper rare. Only 17.26% of 05' Production.
Dislikes: Saab logo vanishing, paint cheap.

Re: Recall?

i hate taking any of my cars to the dealer its never a one time visit  nor ever anything done right.  I opt for just give me a can of stuff and i apply over it  - if mine is not rusted.   Taking the control arm is a PITA and then alignment after - will they align to my preference ?  or factory?  what about my ALK thats on there

I'm hoping I can get away with an inspection to determine that my control arms are indeed rusted, and then just take the replacement parts home and install them myself.  Regardless of who is supposed to do perform the service, I plan to go to my local Subaru dealer first, as I know most of the staff there.

Re: Recall?

So I called Subaru USA and they confirmed the recall but said they can't help me with my Saab.  mad

Called the closest Saab dealer in Atlanta and they had not heard of it yet. I emailed them the NHTSA press release so they can confirm it and call me back.  unamused

Re: Recall?

I would imagine update their recall lists and doing free service probably isnt very high on Saabs list, unfortunately.

Re: Recall?

I can confirm that Subaru Canada dealers got the announcement for this recall on September 21, 2011.

This is a retype of the notice to dealers.

WVX-34 Safety Recall affects approximately 69,779 2002-2007 Impreza (except STI) and 2003-2008 Forester models sold, currently registered in Canada. Repairs involve inspection and either replacement or corrosion treatment of the front lower control arms (transverse link). If the vehicle is driven after the front lower control arm deforms due to rust, the front lower control arm can break, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle.

The campaign Bulletin will be released by early October.
Information concerning materials and equipment needed to perform inspections and repairs associated with this recall will be released in early October.
Owner notification letters will begin mailing mid to late October.
Dealer affected VIN lists will be mailed to dealers prior to mailing of the owner notification letters.

I phoned a Saab dealer and they said they have not heard anything, and the guy told me that my Aero's control arm is from a STI so it is aluminum and will not be affected.  roll

Saab dealer =  facepalm

Our FRONT lower control arms are Impreza/WRX steel arms. My arms show some rust, but I haven't inspected per the recall. What I recall I've seen hasn't alarmed me.

I glanced at mine while I did my oil change about a week ago and they were a little crusty, but no more than anything else under the car. Looked mostly like surface rust. I live right in the heart of the Salt Belt, and Vermont eats cars. I snapped some terrible pictures of them, I'll post them up if I get a chance in the next few days.
