Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

Hello...

I've seen some great shots of some lowered 9-2x's and want to do the same for mine. I'm confused by all the options however and hoping the community can assist. Been reading many threads, etc, but still need some direction!  tongue

Want to get the closest to "stock" ride quality, but with some noticeable (not extreme) lowering done. Definitely want to avoid "saggy butt" and would like, if possible, to retain the stock struts (if I can) for $$ savings.

What are the options in order from least extreme drop to most extreme drop?

The H-Techs drop looks great, but is it a harsh ride?

Thanks to all!

H-Techs are your best bet, the ride (with OE struts) is almost identical to the stock ride.

There are tons of before/after pictures of 9-2xs and WRXs on H-Techs, I helped my brother put a set in his '05 WRX wagon.

No saggy butt, smooth ride. I actually expected them to be firmer.

I was unaware that Eibach were related to ProDrives?

The maker of Epic springs, Dan something or other, used to work at Prodrive and when Prodrive stopped making them he pretty much picked up where they left off with a new name.  That's how I understand it.

There's a bunch of childish/awful threads on Nasioc that talk about it, including a few from the man behind Epic springs himself.

Here's one of them, but I encourage you not to read more than the first four lines, bc it sucks;

Re: Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

ProDrives were made by Eibach. I don't know enough about Epic to make any comments.

I would not be surprised if Epics are made by Eibach.  But that is just speculation.

Re: Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

The NLA ProDrives have proven pretty decent overall for me.  Enough lowering and stiffening to have made gains for autocross, but still decent (but DEFINITELY not likely to be mistaken for stock) ride. Gets a bit hoppy over frost heaves, but the Koni's are able to handle the rebound.  Not sure if stock struts have enough rebound damping for them, which would end up with a busy ride.

OP, seriously, if you're bothering to do springs, considering the age and probable milage of the car, you might as well do struts at the same time. If you go for some form of lowering spring, consider struts with at least a greater rebound rate. Your butt will thank you.

Re: Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

KYB's  GR2 is supposed to be 15-20% firmer than Stock WRX.

the WRX wagon's are $279.50 for the set(all 4)

Had a loaded up ride Monday and the Saab was a little soft n bouncy, Felt like shocks are going out. Looking at going to them sometime late this winter or early spring

Re: Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

I put on a set of the KYB GR-2's from justsuspension.com and paired them with Mach V springs.  I love the combo as it doesnt slam the car, but it is definitely lowered.  Along with the 17x8 wheels that I have, it really makes the car look aggressive, but not like it's riding on the ground.  The ride is good.  Slightly firmer than stock (partially due to the shocks and partially to slightly higher spring rates), but is very comfortable for daily use.  The shocks can be had for around $250-300 shipped for all 4 and the springs are $199.  Great deal.

Here is a link to the springs with some pictures (I dont have any of my car at the moment):

This is the exact setup I plan on running next spring.  Ride height looks clean and stock and ride stiffness should be kept to a minimum.

Hmmm...After much research, I think I will swap out my OE setup with this as well.  The price is not too crazy for my frugal wallet.  Saabydoo...Did you also get "TiC Scooby921 Strut Spacers"?

Costs for items shipped to CA:
Springs & Spacers from Fast WRX  =  $249.39
Excel-G Struts (GR-2's) from Just Suspension  =  $317.63

Excel-G Struts (GR-2's) from Autopartswarehouse  =  $234.47
Enter coupon code 'APW2012'.

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/baske … d=20231386

I just purchased them on Dec. 24th after a lot of searching online.  Best price I found.  Got them within a few days too.  I bought the springs used from a guy on NASIAC for $75 shipped.

I paid a total of $309.47 for the entire setup.

Did you get the spacers as well to battle the saggy butt syndrome?

Re: Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

No, I didnt.  From the pics I have seen online of MachV springs the saggy butt doesnt seem to exist.  Remember that they lower the car slightly more in the front than in the rear to help eliminate it.

Oh okay.  The spacers are pretty inexpensive though, so maybe i'll pick up a pair just in case.   sly

Lucky for you that you scored some used springs.  You get your desired stance sooner rather than later.   biggrin

The struts are coming up at $125 a piece for me, how did you get them so cheap?

Edit: This is the price for what Autopartwarehouse has for the 2005 Saab 9-2X Aero. When I searched for a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon I found the price that you got. The part numbers for what comes up under the 9-2X are entirely different, what is the difference? They are WAY more expensive, but I don't understand what would be different about them.

Here is the link for one of the ones I am talking about http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/S … 6+Steering

Re: Confused by all the spring/strut options! Want to lower with comfort!

I saw that as well.  But after searching and seeing the part numbers on another post (or two, or three  biggrin), I figured it must be good-to-go.   driving  Maybe it's just like our cars... 92x looked better than the '05 Subie version and therefore justified a higher sticker price.   banghead

I didnt look them up via vehicle, I looked up the actual part numbers of the struts we use.  Im not sure the part numbers are for the one you got there.
