Re: Ikbrown's '05 Aero

Some pics from this weekend's meet and cruise! Was good to meet Soulman (aka rolo, aka idkbrown, aka Max) Angelo, and Passat boy, and Miles, good seeing you again! We had a couple last minute bails so there weren't as many that there coulda been but we'll have to get another one together soon!

At Cars & Coffee. A real Saab even decided to park next to us after we had cruised in! Who knows why he opened the hood of his stock 9-3 though..  lol

Re: Ikbrown's '05 Aero

Random fact of the day:

I have been stage 2 for 1 less fill-up than my stock/stage 1 counts combined. I keep track of my MPGs in an excel sheet and I have 62 fill-ups logged for stock and stage 1. Just put in my 61st fill-up in for stage 2. Soon I will have been stage 2 longer than stock and stage 1  banana

That is all. Carry on.

not sure if your driving conditions were the same, but any difference in average mpg with stage1 vs stage2?

There was a small difference between them - under the same conditions I averaged the following:

stock: 24.3 mpgs
stage 1: 24 mpgs
stage 2: 25 mpgs

Since I moved closer to work and now have less freeway / more stop-and-go, I am averaging 22.5 mpgs.

Re: Ikbrown's '05 Aero

You're also 17 and I can only assume, drag racing Passat Boy light to light while leaving school every day.  roxor

How much highway driving do you typically have per fill-up? Even with a portion of my commute being stop and go, I have 18 miles each day of freeway. After a couple $200+ speeding tickets in my high school/college days, and the realization that going 75 vs. 65 cuts down less than a minute on my commute, I keep my speed down on the freeway. No use zooming around and getting stressed in commute freeway traffic. :shakka shakka brah:

Re: Ikbrown's '05 Aero

Oh yea must be nice PA and NYers! ha. Two years ago was much easier since I was just stage 1, then went stage 2 after passing smog. Swapping downpipes is DIYable but definitely not one of the more enjoyable jobs. My dadís convinced that I could go with the hi-flow downpipe and the shop we go to wouldnít notice but he gave my car a pretty good look over last time. I bet my padre taking in his X5 gets less of a visual inspection than my loud saabaru. ha

mhaggin wrote:

Youíll need to get that taken care of before you can sell the car right? Since you need to smog it to sell? Stock downpipes should be super duper cheap, try i-club or Nasioc and you should be able to find one. Or, if all else fails, a auto recycler? Swapping for a working used downpipe might be cheaper than a cat replacement.

Re: Ikbrown's '05 Aero

Plastidip TOP TIP for y'all! haha.

The original owner of my wheels plastidipped them black and didn't do an awesome job removing all of the plastidip - there was a little left over in the small 'speed' holes in between the lug nuts, as well as the lug nut seats. Soooo since I had my wheels removed on Friday I took the opportunity to give them a good cleaning and while I was at it, removed the remaining plastidip.

If you need to remove plastidip from a tough spot, use CHOPSTICKS! ha. I was able to scrape the plastidip out of the holes and then used a small-bristle brush to clean the brake dust out of the holes. Now they're finally spotless white!   banana

That's all  lol

Meh, chopsticks worked just fine. With dip dissolver you'd prob need to use some elbow grease anyway to get it off so my method worked for me. ha. At least my dual-drills are looking a bunch better now. ha.

Re: Ikbrown's '05 Aero

Couple updates for the saabaru that are overdue for posting!

First, I replaced my lateral links and rear sway bar this fall after a shop pointed out the lat links were bent  and fear of a catastrophic lat. Link breaking failure lead me down a path of facepalm of aftermarket parts not working together until I finally just went with all Whiteline since I knew they would be compatible. I ended up with the Whiteline lateral links and Whiteline 24mm rear sway bar. I reused the Perrin endlinks that I had but since the Perrin stout mounts wouldnít work with the Whiteline bar I ended up selling those and replacing with OEM 04+ reinforced sway bar mounts.

So far so good and I love how it handles. Hard to do a direct comparison between my old setup of the Perrin bar with stock lat links since it took so long to get to the final setup and for some of that time I was rocking no sway, but the cornering is very precise and planted with all the parts installed now Ė very neutral w/o understeer. If I were to do it over again I honestly donít think I would go with the Whiteline adjustable lateral links. I did cuz I got them at a great price from my friend who works at a subie shop but I canít say Iím able to distinguish whatís an improvement from those or whatís an improvement from the swaybar. Iím sure it helps tighten things up but stock for the links would have been sufficient for my needs. Another big improvement from replacing all those parts and is no more sway bar clunking and squeaking Ė at least for now. Haha.

The bent lateral links. Driver side was obviously quite a bit worse.

New setup installed and ready for tearing up canyon runs!
http://i1161.photobucket.com/albums/q508/ikbrown89/F2B58294-0B01-468B-AD6F-E4B1DCC50403_zps5ztudg2k.jpg

At BAM w/ Max (sohlman) and Angelo (AJ916). We joined the caravan from Sacramento to the event in the bay area which is always good fun in a line w/ that many subies, stayed at BAM long enough to see all the cars and then peaced out to go on a canyon run recommended by Phil (Kornfeld) and Steve (lizzardo) through the hills east of San Jose. At the time I was sway bar-less so low-speed tight corners were VERY understeer heavy but once we got to The Junction and Del Puerto Canyon I was enjoying the sweeping higher speed corners.

AND finally, in SF for the weekend at a friendís place in North Beach Ö where I got a parking ticket. Damnit. Ha. I think Iíll just take BART in next time and avoid street parking my car. Ha.

HA. yea, well it's never been in snow soooooo.  cool Move to California?

haha, and yea I was so worried about breaking the long bolt loose that holds the lateral links in place behind the brakes because of all the horror stories I read in lateral link swap DIYs. That was probably the easiest part of swapping the lateral links. ha. The hardest bolts to break loose were the front ones on the inside where you can't get a socket. Some pipe slipped over a wrench though and all was good.

Ugh, yea no snow = no salt. Plus I don't think California salts roads even where it snows, maybe a few counties do but most don't as far as I know.
