Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

I watched the first of four parts last night on Velocity.  I enjoyed it, will watch the rest.

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

Roommate and I caught that as well. I didn't realize he raced. I want to know how good he actually is, because without knowing anything about him, it felt a little arrogant to compare himself against McQueen and the likes.

I'll still be watching the rest, though.

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

arrow-up  FWIW, Dempsey has done pretty well for himself when SpeedSource was able to run the GrandAm RX8 (it's hardly an RX8 but not the place to quibble here), not quite where Newman got to, but probably on the level with McQueen.

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

Interesting to know.  I haven't really heard anything about him online and until last week, I haven't had cable for the last four years, so this was literally the first I've ever heard of his racing career.  That's why I had my skepticism.

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

he is in the Newman mold, deeply committed, improving slowly but surely.

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

My wife says to me the other day: 'What's this show about Patrick Dempsey?'
My response:  'He's a race car drive now.'
Her:  'OMG are you serious, since when?  I used to love him in the 80s movies.'
Me:  'Well now we can love him together.'
Her:  'Is he any good?'
Me:  'I think he's a bit faster than he was on that tractor in Can't Buy Me Love.'

This.  Best thing for him is he is starting a bit younger than PLN did AND he's earned respect from his peers faster than PLN did (and I'm a big Newman fan, he's my home track hero and did a few films right in my hometown and was locally an actual cool guy). It's too bad his "base" team and mfg sponsor has made a few poor choices recently (the diesel MS6 is in the now discontinued GX class which never really took off... because other teams feared exactly what happened, the dissolution of the class after 1 season.) He'll have to find a competitive ride next season unless Mazda steps up to the plate with something significant, but they lack a production based platform to do so (any class for the MX5 would be a significant step down and poor career move, as would going into Porsche GT3 Cup as it stands in the US).

biggrin

Totally forgot about the tractor.  Now all I can think about is (no Dempsey content) ..."you owe me $4!..."

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

My good buddy, is good friends with Dempsey (also raced on his team, in a prototype), through the racing circles so I've got hang out with him a couple times at races and after races. Super nice guy, and like people have mentioned, very commited to what he is doing  up  In the ALMS and GrandAm, there are too many weekend racers (rich guys who buy teams or seats), and they don't know how to drive very well at all... But the teams put up with them as they bring a lot of money to the table. It is refreshing to see a talanted guy come from the weekend race corner, and actually bring something positive (both in driving abilities, marekting/image, and sponsors) to the series.

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

Just happens the kids at work are watching the Great Escape.  Totally forgot about another (talented) actor/driver, James Garner. He didn't progress as much as MqQueen or Newman, but he was pretty damned good. Dempsey has gotten further. Good to hear Dempsey is a good guy to boot.

And we must not forget...James Dean...

Re: Patrick Dempsey: Racing LeMans

Hey Everyone, I have a favor to ask.  I don't get the Velocity Network. Would anyone be willing to record tonight's and the two subsequent episodes of the Dempsey Racing Le Mans program and burning them down to DVD or something?  I'll owe you a beer or something for your troubles.

TIA
