Nice flames.  In fact, it went from seemingly OK to blowed up/on fire in almost no time.

Any report on *how* it blowed up?

Based on what we can tell, looks like one of the bolts connecting the rod to the crank developed a stress fracture over time and eventually snapped.  And that caused what you see above.  We won't know for sure until we tear down the motor.

Re: ChumpCar at NJMP

This is the most intense "holy shit it's on fire!" video from amateur-ish racing that I've seen yet...skip to 2:25:

The worst part is that he forgot to put his balaclava on for that particular race.  He ended up with burns all over his neck and face.  I still can't believe that balaclavas aren't mandatory in Lemons.  Not sure about Chump.

Safety gear is the last place I look when I'm trying to cut costs.  I'm not sure I really realized they were optional, because it didn't even cross my mind to not get one (and use it all the time).  I don't need the Niki Lauda makeover.

They are not mandatory in Chump, and to be honest I don't wear one.  I probably will now.  The other thing on my list to add that's not mandatory is neck restraint.  We were going to spend that money on one for the upcoming race, but now it looks like the budget will be used on an engine.

Re: ChumpCar at NJMP

I bought a HANS before my first LeMons race.  Another driver borrowed one, and another used the neck donut.  Now, we all share the HANS.  A habit from my motorcycle racing days is to get teh best safety gear I can.  They're not cheap though.

Re: ChumpCar at NJMP

I'd get that neck head and neck restraint ASAP.  I put a thread together on the lemons forums that goes through different options:

http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/viewt … p?id=14235

There might be newer options out now, but that list is pretty comprehensive.

Yeah, I've read that thread, very helpful.  We'll be getting either Hans or Necksgen so we can easily swap among ourselves.  Like I said, plan was to do it for next race.
