Love for the Saabaru

So yesterday I was backing out of a spot in a parking lot.  There was a SUV parked next to me so I was backing out really slowly as I couldn't see to the drivers side.  As soon as I saw a car coming (I was only out of the spot like 5 feet and not in her side of the "lane") I stopped.  With a delayed reaction, she (older lady) lays on the horn and stops her car only delaying both of us.

Anyway, this is where it gets interesting.  I had my windows down and a guy walking in front of my car YELLS at the top of his lungs, "WATCH OUT FOR THE SAABARU"!!!!  It was really strange.  Not only did he know about the Saabaru, he was a defender of it.  Yes, it was strange.  So as I pulled out and got next to him I yelled over at him, "I know, there are not many of them left"!  He yelled enthusiastically, "THAT's RIGHT!!!".

Do you guys ever get love for the Saabaru?  So few people know what our cars are but I would say the older my car gets, the more attention it seems to get.  It is fairly routine that I see someone looking at it in a parking lot or checking it out on the road.

Maybe this is a cool story bro post but I figured I would share.   92x

Re: Love for the Saabaru

Haha that's a good one.  With the wider wheels and the coilovers my car breaks a lot of necks.  Most of the time I think people just don't know what it is.

I got a similar story from last year.  I was in the city and parking in front of an Epic Burger when I noticed a group of Japanese businessmen staring at my car as I drove past.

I get out and as I walk by one of them goes "Is that a Saab?" to another one and his son who must have been like 5 or 6 was like "No it's a Subaru!"  After that one of the guys turned to me and asked what it was since they knew that familiar modified Subaru sound, but were surprised to hear it coming from a Saab wagon.

That lil kid was cool as hell.  cool

Re: Love for the Saabaru

Nice. Although rare for me its awesome to get some "SAABARU" love. I had one dude a few weeks back yell Saabaru at me when I past by right as I was telling my GF how I hate how the car never gets any love from Subaru guys. It was great to finally get some love.  banana

Most of the time I don't even get a head nod.  hmm

Re: Love for the Saabaru

Nice - I don't think I've ever encountered a defender of the Saabaru quite like that before  biggrin.

Most of the people who notice the Saabaru and give it its due love are Subaru drivers. I also get a lot of gas station 'hey is that a Subaru?' comments and confused looks from car wash employees when I pull up and they're looking to write down what kind of car it is and all my badges say SAABARU. smile I fool a lot of people who think the SAABARU badges are OEM.

To Hammy's point about the rumble coming out of a Saab, I've had a couple Subaru guys ask me if I swapped a boxer motor into the Saab and then I have to go into the bastard child background story. ha. So that 5-6 year old officially has more Subaru knowledge then some WRX owners! haha.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

I came out to my car at Home Depot one day to a guy taking pictures of my car nose-to-nose with his red Impreza. He was ga-ga over the Saabaru, and definitely knew what it was.

I am still surprised at how many people will post a FS ad, and how often the 'will trade for 9-2x Aero + cash' phrase comes up.

I also think that as time marches on, the prestige associated with this particular car will only grow.  up

Re: Love for the Saabaru

I traded an 04 WRX for a new 2005 Saabaru 9 years ago.  After I did that, I no longer got waved at by WRX drivers.  This past week I got waves from WRX drivers AND Saab drivers.
Today the guy fixing my tire complimented by saabaru badges.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

There is no way to tell for real. In 2011 there was 5 registered to Transportstyrelsen. There is also the first 9-2x ever built standing in the Saab museum in Trollhättan. That is a total of 6. Do you own one? I know "ville" had his for sale in april did you buy his?

Re: Love for the Saabaru

Yes, I bought Ville's even thought it was starved of oil.  And I guess I should check with Transportstyrelse, I'm curious.

By the way - Ville mentioned you have solved the side view mirror issue, or did I get that wrong? Im very interested to know how you did it. If you don't mind, go ahead and PM me so we don't derail this thread smile

Re: Love for the Saabaru

A cop once told me my car looked like a 'hot dog' going around the corner. I also got laughed at for having STi badged GR brembos by someone in a cobalt with pink calipers and drums

Id say no, no love for my saabaru and thats exactly why I love it. Zero attention. Zero tickets. Low expectations but big surprises  cool

Re: Love for the Saabaru

The garage I take my car to for servicing sent me an email this week with the subject line ...

"Your Saabaru is due for an oil change"

Nice it wasn't just some automated mailing.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

I like reading these stories!  up

I shared one a recently about the Subaru parts guy:

AERONH wrote:

I passed a Subaru Parts truck this morning around 3:00am on Rt. 3 in MA. As I drove by, he gave two short honks... I guess I was spotted by the Subaru parts guy  cool

A few weeks ago I had to leave my car in long term parking at the Boston airport. They were doing work on the place, so parking was VERY LIMITED. The guy in the garage told me to just leave the keys with the valet, and they'd park it for me. I'm a little protective about my baby, so there was no way I'd let some random dude in the parking garage take my keys for a week (to put it lightly).

I told him I'd try my luck and look for a spot. So I kept driving around and spotted another garage attendant. I slowed down next to him and he immediately started smiling and nodding approvingly. As I started to ask him about spots, he leaned towards the window and interrupted me with: "And you even have the STi cluster! That's sick man!" He then proceeded to find me a spot to park(which was actually a crosswalk in the garage  biggrin ). I've never been so thankful for the Saabaru.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

Went to a show with the Saab and the wife brought her 07 Outback Sport. Had a guy ask why I had the Saab stuff on a WRX? Instead of going through the bastard child stuff, I just told him, I did not like getting tickets when it was a WRX. His response was " dude that's cool"

Re: Love for the Saabaru

arrow-up haha that's funny. The opposite of what most people's reactions are in thinking I did a boxer motor swap into a Saab. ha.

I'm suprised at the peeps are are saying their Saabarus don't get much attention. Although it is mostly subie folks who recognize it, I've also gotten thumbs up from a local modded 9-3 and frequently notice people staring at it while passing me on the freway - like they'll stop just behind it and I can see them eyeing it, then pass me and I can see them eye-ing through their mirrors. ha.

I was at my girlfriends softball game the other day and the bus driver for the team kept walking around my car looking at different parts and got pretty close to the front emblem, he looked very confused

Re: Love for the Saabaru

I work at GM and there is a lot of love for the Saabaru. When the the employee deals came out there were a lot of Saabarus in the parking lots but over the years the numbers have been reduced. There are a lot of employees that want to see the return of a hot hatch to GM.

I got a walkaround from some dude at my office the other day, but for the most part I don't see any of the gawking that you guys are talking about.  Some nods or finger lifting from random STis, but that's all.  Maybe I should wash the car more often...
