Dashcam Thread

Curious what people are using as dashcam setups?

I know they are pretty damn cheap now, so before just grabbing one of Amazon I wanted to see what you guys used.

Looking for something small, cheap, automatic, records over itself, etc.

Re: Dashcam Thread

Yeah that's the one I've been looking at as well. You should set it up and let me know what you think. Gonna have to look into a way to hide the power wire.

This might be overkill (~$700), but I saw this the other day and thought it was interesting:

Re: Dashcam Thread

Looks like the Foneso or the E-Prance for value.

E-Prance... am I getting old or is a "free" 640x480 auxiliary camera an amazing value incentive? Wow!

Re: Dashcam Thread

Wow, that Jalopnik post is shit. All of them no-names and likely paid to be on there. Not surprising coming from Gawker.

I use a B40 A118. It's basically the same as a G1W, but a lot better form factor and more discreet.

https://dashcamtalk.com/ is a good resource if you really want to research them.

Re: Dashcam Thread

I use my Garmin VIRB action cam.  It's a bit of a pain to use and it does require ongoing maintenance (charging the battery, clearing the memory card) but it did save my butt this winter.  I'm looking for a dedicated dash cam now.

Re: Dashcam Thread

This was discussed not too long ago here

I installed thisabout a week ago. In September. Paid $99 from Newegg. Very satisfied thus far, for what it does. Has built in battery, can easily detach from windshield if needed, takes stills, writes gps data to separate files, 2160/1080/720p 30fps modes, 3mp cmos, 135* fov.
Records about 3.2 hours with a 32GB card before it starts to over-write the oldest files. Can be hard wired to "motion detect" mode (can't comment on this, it turns on within 5 seconds of ignition key turning and goes off maybe 10 seconds after key goes off). Takes about a minute to find a gps signal, although it's taken up to 5. Built in screen is very useful for browsing files and changing settings.
Somewhat chinglish instructions and menu, but not horrible. Not a bargain...but for $100, might save me a headache. Every day, I see some asshat run a red light or merge into someone else. It's only a matter of time before  eek

On the way to work:

and at night

So far, it's been...ok. Sometimes it doesn't want to overwrite files, so you have to manually delete them(delete All option, saves manually locked files). I keep it set to 1080/30fps and quality is decent, get about 3:40 before it overwrties on a 32GB card. It's crashes a couple times on startup, just keeps beeping at me until the battery dies (unplugged) and then comes back to life once plugged in. Takes about 40 minutes for it to die when it does this. Overall... $99 well spent.

Had this thought, it will start happening soon.  Once insurance companies start offering discounts for using it or something.  In 10 years we will look back and think it was crazy how that wasn't standard in 2015.

Re: Dashcam Thread

You know what would be slick is a portable GPS unit like the kind that suction cups to your windshield.  It should have a dashcam built into the front of it.

Re: Dashcam Thread

This thread is timely... I received one as a Christmas gift. I haven't used it much, having just pulled it out of the package yesterday, but I will report back. My model in particular is the Security Man CarCam SD; it looks like it's already been superceded but hey, free.

I use my Contour helmet cam when I ride, yea it looks kinda goofy strapped to the side but gets much better perspective compared to suction cup mount to the gas tank. I've always been a fan of Contour and not Go Pro simply because of the telle tubby factor. For all intents and purposes, they are the same and have the same functions, just GP cost more. The last generation Contour Roam (2) can be had for $99, I'm very happy with mine after 2 years, countless snowboard trips, bike rides, motorcycle rides, swimming hole diving in the mountains...thing is tough as nails out of the box, without any case, and is sleeker than GP imo.

The non-removable battery ever an issue?

Yeah, about about a day later the police will start demanding video at every accident scene...

Can't really say its an issue, more inconvenience. I plug it in to transfer files, and leave it charging that way. The one day I forgot to, it didn't really let me down. Has never bugged out in the wet or snow/ice. I have a portable charging battery for other devices, which is more useful than a spare battery I think- providing you bring the cable.
