Smoky Mountains Road Trip

Hey all,  looking to possibly take a road trip to the Smoky Mountains this Spring.  Just wanted to know of some good roads and spots to visit around there.  I haven't figured out which part I will be going to yet but would like to visit a nice scenic part with good roads and areas to camp.  Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I've always wanted to drive / bike this road. Even after the crazy popularity and increased police presence, it still calls to me

It's fun. There are so many good roads around there. Even the ones in the park are fun, although you really shouldn't be driving fast in there.

And yeah, you can get motion sickness very easily.

Re: Smoky Mountains Road Trip

I've frequented the area with my Dad in Porsches since I was a little kid. This is one of my favorite routes https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tapoco, … !3e0?hl=en . I recommend camping at Indian Boundary Campground right off of the Cherahola Skyway. While you're there I recommend visiting Fontana Dam, and hiking/ swimming at the waterfall on river road. There are tons of things to do, just drive and you'll find plenty of places to stop.

Re: Smoky Mountains Road Trip

I'm going to be heading down to NC on Tuesday-Saturday for a vacation.  Going to be staying at a campground in Sylva, NC.  Don't really have any plans yet but we will probably do a lot of sight-seeing, hiking, etc.  Any other recommendations of things to do and places to see, besides the ones listed above?

Re: Smoky Mountains Road Trip

Glad you started this thread as I'm looking to start exploring the area now that I live down here! I will say, my limited time on the Blue Ridge Parkway has been enjoyable. Fairly exciting driving road (even in the chevy cruze rental car) and absolutely stunning views around every corner. Need to get the Saabaru out there!

drewsro, give me a holler if you're in Asheville!

That's a great area. Maggie Valley is interesting. Think Wisconsin Dells, with more meth and way more scenery.  lol

There are endless hiking/biking trails around there to the east and west. Pisgah is huge. DuPont is huge. The Blue Ridge Parkway is huge. Asheville is great for visiting. Have fun!

The Biltmore Estate is rather impressive. Very touristy.

Yeah, the weather is really very odd this week.

Asheville pinball museum is good, or just go to breweries. Sierra Nevada's is impressive, but isn't really near anything else. Lots of breweries in downtown Asheville.

Re: Smoky Mountains Road Trip

Wow sorry for your bad luck. Have you maybe looked at weather in surrounding areas to potentially drive out of it?

Re: Smoky Mountains Road Trip

So far it's been spotty with the rain. We ended up driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and checked out a few waterfalls off 276. Tomorrow we're going to try and check Asheville.

Re: Smoky Mountains Road Trip

Last few days turned out nice so we got some more hiking in along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Also visited Asheville on Thursday.  Tried the Rocket Girl Lager at Asheville Brewing  embeer (sorry, I'm not a big beer person).  Also spotted a blue  linear 92x in downtown Asheville.  Overall, a trip I would do again!  You NC guys are lucky to live in such a beautiful area.  The Midwest kinda blows  unamused

Just some pictures I took.  I am no photographer and used an iPhone 6, so don't hate  biggrin
