Re: My project Saabaru

Finally remembered to call Blouch turbo and asked their opinion on using turbo blankets. The tech told me that turbo blankets can cause damage to the turbo in situations when the turbo is not able to cool down adequately. I'm staying with the turbo heat shield, I want my turbo to stay fresh  biggrin

Re: My project Saabaru

Guess what, your Subaru is set to allow the turbo to cool down properly smile

FHI's position regarding this is that it is not necessary to perform a "cool down/idling" procedure, as was recommended with past turbo models. Our current turbo engine has a far greater cooling capacity and, coupled with technology advances, makes this practice no longer necessary. This explains why information about cool down is not included in the Impreza Owner's Manual.

The heat contained in the turbo charger will begin to vaporize the coolant at the turbo charger after the engine is stopped. This hot vapor will then enter the coolant reservoir tank which is the highest point of the coolant system. At the same time the vapor exits the turbo charger, coolant supplied from the right bank cylinder head flows into the turbo. This action cools the turbo charger down. This process will continue until the vaporizing action in the turbo charger has stopped or cooled down.

Re: My project Saabaru

If a turbo isn't able to cool down properly I'd be skeptical whether a blanket would make a huge difference in it getting damaged or not, but it's plausible. For me the heat reduction it provides keeping everything else in the engine bay cooler is worth it, plus the heatshield is among the biggest PITA things to take on and off.

Nice video, though landscape mode is your friend wink You said no tune yet, did you scale any of your cranking values for the larger injectors, or it just fired up on the stock tune? Your front o2 code could be related to running super rich if the car still thinks it has the stock wrx injectors in there with your 850cc ones. My advice--get a tune sooner rather than later. There's enough nice days left in Fall here to enjoy the fruits of all your labor. Keep it up!

Re: My project Saabaru

I know, weather here has been spectacular, I picked up an 06 WRX to scratch the boost itch. I'm expecting to not have to touch the turbo heat shield any time soon, I had to fabricate a bracket to attach it on the lower mounting point. I've spoken to Stephen at IA Performance about the code and the possibility of it been related to the aftermarket injectors and exhaust on the stock map. The P0031 point to low voltage on the upstream sensor. I'm going to replace it before getting the car tuned, its an important part, its old, may as well just replace it. I'm going to give the video thing another shot, i just shot that one while my other car was warming up and in a hurry to get to work.

Re: My project Saabaru

Today was a good day, figured out why I was having no luck bleeding the brakes. As it turns out, I made the mistake of installing the calipers wrong, the bleeder was at the lowest point. Rotated the calipers with the bleeders up and all went well from there. I finally took the car out for a spin around the neighborhood. Everything seems well, some smoke from under the coolant tank, can't see anything wrong, hopefully it'll stop smoking. I drove it around for 25 minutes, felt so good to finally drive it.

Today the rescue project got insured and registered, tuning is scheduled at The Shop in CT for the coming Monday, looks like I'll be driving the car before snow falls.

Re: My project Saabaru

My recently acquired WRX started blowing oil into the exhaust manifold and straight out the exhaust tip, smoking and throwing misfire codes. Compression tested 140 to 150psi all around, the spark plugs show no sign of oil, fucking 2.5L.

Re: My project Saabaru

Picked up the gray car from The Shop in CT, unfortunately $425 later and nothing but compression results, no real answer as to what is wrong. I was just told my car needs a motor. I did leave rescue project with them to get tuned, hope that goes well.

Re: My project Saabaru

Got my rescue project back from tuning today, I asked for a safe tune on 93 octane and 19-20 psi. The result feels way better than the dyno numbers tell. I had anticipated full boost by 3700-3800rpm but it's not until 4400rpm, does pull strong all the way to 7,500rpm. The numbers were also disappointing with only 284whp and 247wtq. The Shop uses a Mustang dyno and claim that their dyno is still on its factory calibration and therefore numbers are low. Whatever the case may be, the car feels very good but I'm still suspicious that maybe avcs isn't working. I called them after I got to my shop and asked them if they had checked if avcs was working and what psi the tune is for but they were too busy and could not give me answers at that moment. They told me they will look at logs and call me back tomorrow, I hope so. In any case, stepping on the gas pedal feels like everything is alright. On the tragedy side of matters, the original ECU that came on rescue project appears to have been previously flashed and is locked, unable to force ready or turn off tgv related codes and leaving me without a ECU for inspection.
For the record, here is what powers my car:
2001 JDM STi ver 7 motor
Matching ECU
NGK BKR7EIX iridium plugs
Deatcshwerks 850 injector
Blouch 18g xtr turbo
Perrin turbo inlet
Perrin lightweight crank pulley
Cobb air intake with box
Cobb up pipe
Cobb electronic boost controller
Cobb catted down pipe
Cobb catback
Walbro 255 fuel pump
IA Performance avcs wire harness
Rotella T6 motor oil

Re: My project Saabaru

Numbers do seem really low man, even for a mustang dyno. With 93 octane you should well into the 300+whp range with much more torque. I would think it should spool up better as well. Not apples to apples, but my v7 with dom 1.5 just did 331/289 @19.5psi(heartbreaker mustang dyno) on 91 octane with full boost at 4kish. I would definitely check back with the tuner and see if avcs was working. Do they have prior experience tuning ej207s?

Re: My project Saabaru

Yes, the tuner is STi Mikey, the guy has experience tuning ej207. He tuned my ver 8 at EFI Logics when he worked there and got good solid numbers and performance out of it. I followed him to The Shop, where he tunes now because I wanted his magic again. They tell me The Shop dyno reads 8% lower than EFI's, EFI claims their dyno reads much lower than average. The Shop says their dyno settings are factory spec, that they have not messed with the dyno to get higher numbers. The Shop owner is all about been straight up and honest, that's his thing.

Re: My project Saabaru

Even on a stock calibrated mustang dyno, i would have to think your numbers should better, especially your torque. I know sti mikey is supposed to be one of the best tuners in the industry. I would have to assume if the avcs wasnt working properly it would have been glaringly obvious to him, but it still could be a possibility.

Another thing that could really be killing power/spool is the cobb catted dp and catback. How many miles on the dp? If the cat begins to go/clog it can really adversely affect power and response. Also, the cobb dp bottlenecks to almost 2.25" at the midpipe connection, and while not so much of an issue for a stock turbo stage 2 type setup,  it becomes much more of a restriction when you upgrade turbos. I modified my cobb DP and cobb exhaust to be full 3" all the way. I did this before my dom1.5 when i was still stock vf30, and while i have no dyno data to back it up, it was very obvious the car loved the full 3" compared to the stock cobb configuration.

Re: My project Saabaru

Those numbers are crazy low considering my old Saabaru was making 223 whp and 281 wtq on a mustang dyno with a stock turbo ej255 and Cobb dp. But if the car feels good to you at the end of the day that's what matters. Numbers are just numbers.

Re: My project Saabaru

What inlet size did you go with on the turbo? Peak numbers are affected by that choice, whereas actual powerband is less so. If AVCS isn't working it should be pretty obvious on a dyno where you get feedback to know if changes to it are making any difference.

Dyno numbers are comparable only to other cars on that same machine--ask what a stock/stage 2 wrx makes for comparison.

If the car feels good that's really what matters, and sounds like it does, which is great. Congrats, nicely done getting it working before it has to hibernate for winter smile

Re: My project Saabaru

Yeah, every dyno is going to read different, even when comparing one mustang dyno to another. Like Countriccati suggested, i would find out what a stock sti puts down on their dyno.

The numbers being really low is one thing, but an 18g xtr on a free flowing ej207 should be seeing full boost before 4.4k thats for sure.

Sorry, meant to ask about the exhaust (hot) size housing size, not the inlet size--did you go with 8cm^2 or bigger in the end?

Re: My project Saabaru

My dom 1.5 10cm hotside is hitting full boost @4.2k. Stock vf30 was 3650. I do think going with a ELH helped my spool up and torque curve quite a bit.

I'd expect rodmans setup to be spooled by 4k, even if it is a 10cm hotside.
