The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Don't think a New Top Gear thread has been started so ... what are your thoughts on the new british Top Gear that's not entirely british?

Someone posted this on our local subie forum which says Chris Evans is to take a smaller role in the show moving forward due to poor audience reaction to his first few episodes.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06 … -audience/

Are you watching it?
Are you refusing to watch it due to no Clarkson et all?
What do you like about it?
What do you absolutely hate about it?
Why so many presenters?
Who do you like/dislike?
Why is Chris Evans so enthusiastic?
Why is there so much vomiting out of cars?

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

i've come to the conclusion that chris evans doesn't actually enjoy the experience of driving...

he may like nice cars and their stats, but the act of driving doesn't give him any enjoyment...

matt leblanc is good and i think if they get him interacting with chris harris and sabine more that would be good.

the new interview/superstar stuff is crap... although the rallycross course is fun.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Less Chris Evans would be good, they could keep him around and still have a successful show, though I'd have no problem with him going away. It's hard to look at those glasses and hear his yelling. New course is very cool and a clever way to get away from the old show, as is using a decent car.

The show is fun to watch and is still better than what Fifth Gear became.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

I've only watched the first 2 episodes so far, but I agree with what everyone is saying: less Chris Evans. Some of the challenges seem like they are trying too hard and the chemistry just isn't there yet.  Matt and Tinie Tempah were fun to watch on the SUV challenge though.

Are you watching it? Nope, but I'll give it a try some day.

Are you refusing to watch it due to no Clarkson et all? No; I was quite fond of Top Gear up until 2007 or so, when I grew tired of the schtick. Their antics started to overshadow the car stuff. So a departure from them is actually a bit of a relief. Fair warning, I say this having liked the American version after they developed some chemistry

What do you like about it? I like Joey, Sabine and Chris Harris (all from previous exposure). I'm curious to see how their camaraderie grows over time- everyone compares to the Clarkson TG but it was rubbish the first few years (I only saw those
seasons in retrospect, but they were certainly lacking compared to the seasons I first became familiar with)

N/A to the rest of your questions until I've seen it.

What do you absolutely hate about it?
Why so many presenters?
Who do you like/dislike?
Why is Chris Evans so enthusiastic?
Why is there so much vomiting out of cars?

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

I was hoping Sabine would be part of the new show and I'm glad she is but I would like to see more of her and less of Chris Evans (no surprise).  Everybody seems tense and awkward, and call me juvenile but I like to see things getting blown up and other shenanigans.  Even parts that could be really funny, like when they had those drag queens on, just seemed so stuffy and forced.  Maybe they will get better over time I'm hoping.

Chris Evans is stepping down.

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-36707266

I haven't seen more than the first episode yet, so I haven't seen enough to say whether that will boost ratings or not.

It can't help but boost ratings.  Chris Evans was annoying most of the time and shrill enough of the time to rally grate on my nerves.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

That's pretty messed up that someone can come forward 20+ years after an event, with no details at all except that the accuser is pointing a finger at someone. And the press is happy to provide the name of that someone.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Sabine is okay.  She is a great driver and is good at being German, but I'm not sure if its her English or just her presenter skills but I wouldn't want to watch a 10 minute segment of her reviewing a car like I would with Chris Harris.

I think that about sums it up. ha. The irish guy does nothing for me, is that Eddie? I forget his name. Sabine... Sweet nectar, I could listen to that accent all day. hahaha. I don't know what you're saying Hammy.  roll

EDIT:
I think Chris Harris Rory Reid and Matt Leblanc do the best individual car reviews that don't make me cringe and think about how much I miss Clarkson, Hampster, and Captain Slow.

I prefer Rory over Chris Harris for the same reason I prefer Rutledge Wood over Tanner Foust, Chris may know how to drive well but I didn't really care as much for his presentation style. I think Rory's segments have been well done and I like the personality he puts in to it.

Do we think that next year they will revise the million presenters with small roles format for the good ones or do we think this is the format here to stay?

One thing I DO NOT like about the new top gear is the new interview format. It's the interviewer's job to present the guests!!!!! Why in the hell do they make the celebrities awkwardly read the tele-prompter to introduce each other!? It's one of the most awkward things I've seen on a show. I wonder why they did that, Evans said he didn't want to? who knows.
Also, I think applause based contests are abitrary and awkward, I'm all for talking about their first car and cool current car, but doing an applause-o-meter contest is awkward. Pass. I've been fast forwarding the celebrity sections.

Glad Evans won't be in it next season.  up

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Yeah, Eddie Jordan is the Irish guy. Former race driver and F1 team owner. He's just a bit eccentric. Hammy's right about Sabine. The Laguna Seca challenge was really good, but even in the Italy race, she wasn't as interesting to watch when it wasn't her pushing flat out.

General consensus is correct. Star segment blows week-old ass.

Fucking seriously.

First off there is the super cringey have them talk about what the other is doing, when they couldn't frankly give a fuck.

And then the stupid fucking who's car is better with the oh the audience cheered louder for this bullshit, which they just choose whichever evens up the score for the race in the rally car thing to be the tie breaker.

And then the rally race pretty much sucks completely too.

The whole segment is fucked.

It felt a bit awkward without the music, the Stig, "on that bombshell", "oh cock", and all the other stuff that is arbitrarily owned by the BBC.  Still enjoyed it.

Apparently not.  Bwa bwa.

The "news" segment was weak and I felt like I was missing the joke with their celebrity thing.  I think they're finding their stride, which they will quickly.

Sure they have to jump through some hoops to avoid lawsuit, but I'm fucking about it so far.  That Mustang vs. RS tease.  Not sure if they are doing just the Fiata or a Fiata vs Miata.  I want moar!!!
