Reputable source for JDM 2.5L engine?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a replacement engine and thought I would go the JDM route. My car's an '05 Saab Linear (2.5L) and has developed an engine knock at 96k miles :-(

Any recommendations for a reputable dealer of JDM engines? I see a lot of dealers online, but not sure if they're all legit.

Thanks,
A

Re: Reputable source for JDM 2.5L engine?

I just bought a 205 from JDM Racing.  In the process of swapping.  They listed a number of JDM 207's and other engines.  Also there is JSpec auto.

Re: Reputable source for JDM 2.5L engine?

Thanks for the info. I looked up JSpecauto, but I'm not quite sure which engine would be the exact match for the 2005 Linear I have

Any clues?

Why would you want a JDM NA motor when there are thousands of EJ253 engines available stateside that will be a "direct drop in and replace" situation?

I've been looking for used engines online, but the ones I found had higher mileage 130k+ (through LKQ), vs JDM with ~60k miles. My saabaru has only 96k, and thus I was trying to give it the best treatment  I could.

I found the same thing when searching for 205 engines through LKQ.  Mileages well in the upper 100K.

LKQ kinda sucks. Just look for local part outs and Nasioc. I've seen people selling them for short money. I sold mine a few years ago on Cl for $300 because I couldn't get 5 for it. JDM NA is more trouble than its worth methinks, considering how many Outbacks, Legacys, Impreza's (OBS) and Foresters came with that identical engine sold in the US.

This is my Saabaru. There are many like it, but this one is Mine!

arrow-up This.

A salvage yard in Vermont (where Subarus are prevalent) would have dozens, if not hundreds of these motors on hand, most of them likely less than $1000.

Re: Reputable source for JDM 2.5L engine?

Thanks a lot everyone, I found a USDM 2.5L NA engine from an identical car at http://www.vandsautodismantlers.com/ in Sacramento. Will update on how this fix goes!

Many thanks to those who pointed me to http://www.car-part.com/

Re: Reputable source for JDM 2.5L engine?

Turbo motors are more similar aka less variations globally. You can adapt the turbo Subaru motors more easily to other turbo applications. Plus the turbo motors are desirable and so people import them. However the importers still don't know the nuances so you could easily get screwed on a great JDM turbo motor that simply isn't very compatible with your application

Non-turbo motors tend to be a LOT more specific and I doubt you'd find anything imported non-turbo that will be a direct or even mostly the same as a USDM one. America has the most absurd emissions requirements of any country, so we get all these special engines that have extra shit and were one-off just for America. God help you if you live in California and have some of the specific stuff made only for California
