About to buy a 05 92x Aero 5spd 149k Miles

Its from a dealer. Test drove it and here are the bad things:

149k.
No AC. Blows hot air
Clunk from front of the car over bumps
No remotes. Only 1 key.
Pass. Radiator fan didn't work. Fixed that on the spot with a new fuse.
Driver caliper was cooperish in color. The others were normal gray looking.
Pass. side mirror had paint missing.
Failed State inspection for leaky power steering? I don't know what that's all about.
No Maintenance history at all. It's at a dealer lot and carfax doesn't show squat.

And here are the good things:
1 Owner.
Body was straight, no dents or dings. Few scratches but nothing big. Very little to no rust. Surface rust at most.
Clutch seemed good.
Drove fine, hit boost well.
Interior seemed clean.
Sunroof works. Everything electrical works.
New tires. 17inch saab rims. 1 had crucial curb rash though.

$5200 OTD.

Should I go for it?

Really? I guess i have to try to look harder. Or owners are really overestimating the prices of their 92x aero's.

Makes me feel better about not rushing to buy this car. i think the dealer thinks he can get more for it, which is why he's so slow on getting back to me.

I told him if he can fix the power steering leak and it pass state inspection, he has a deal.

I'd keep looking.  They only get cheaper by the day.

Sounds like there is quite a bit of maintenance to take care of before it's even roadworthy and who knows if the timing belt has ever been done.

For sure the timing belt needed to get done. The timing belt cover bolts looked untouched and caked with oil, as was both valve covers.

Couple of pics i took. That orange caliper is concerning. The underbody seems relatively clean though.

Anybody notice anything?

Undercarriage looks great, caliper color is a non issue, maybe one was replaced and has aged differently. This car isn't worth $5200.

I was looking randomly and came upon this aero (it's auto transmission though) yet the condition looks amazing

Re: About to buy a 05 92x Aero 5spd 149k Miles

What would be a fair price for this car? I mean, this is a dealer so they need to make SOME money off this transaction.

It passed state inspection so that's a plus.

Should i ask for anything else?

Re: About to buy a 05 92x Aero 5spd 149k Miles

I paid $5200 for mine almost 3 years ago with similar mileage and it just needed air in the tires and an air filter.  If you pay more than $4k (maybe even $3500) for the one pictured you're a fool.  Keep looking and stop thinking about this one.  It needs far too much work to be considered even in 'good' condition.

And don't worry about what the dealer 'needs' - it's your money and you shouldn't pay a dollar more than it's worth to you.  Besides, with all of the things wrong with this one, there are for sure more problems lurking that the dealer doesn't know about and/or won't tell you about.

Re: About to buy a 05 92x Aero 5spd 149k Miles

I think in that condition with that mileage a (sane) private seller would have that car priced between 3-4k ish from what I've seen.  I understand it's a dealer so the markup is going to be there but if I were you I would try to find a better condition and lower mileage car being sold privately.  They are definitely out there.

This is the BIGGEST flag for me. If it doesn't pass, then you just purchased the problem. You either drop unknown amounts of money trying to fix it or get lots of tickets. It's a black pit of $$$$ unknown that can easily spiral past the purchase price. Besides, anyone ever heard of emissions not passing for power steering issues?!?!

Answer is NO.  For reasoning, see above.

Good luck with the hunt. smile

Re: About to buy a 05 92x Aero 5spd 149k Miles

So i didn't get it. I made a deal with another car that i couldn't pass up.

Subaru Outback 2.5xt 5spd!!!! And it was in better shape and condition than this car.

Thank guys for all your help. I'm glad I didn't let my emotions get the better of me. I still want a 92x though...it's a dream of mine to own one day. But for now, i'll play with this outback.

I'll be honest though...

I'd trade someone with a 92x aero in a heartbeat. That's how bad i want a Saabaru.
