2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

just curious, a friend needs struts replaced in her 2002 Outback, was quoted $1100 by an independent mechanic (muffler place) in Cincinnati.  Is that a reasonable price for that job?

Thanks,

Jim

Yes, all 4.  Seems high to me too, but never had it done, so.....

Re: 2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

OE parts are $80/ea on Rock Auto.  Call it $500 with markup.  $600 in labor would be 8 hours, which seems like a lot.

Re: 2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

look up the KYB part number and buy the GR2/ExcelG on Amazon or RockAuto. definitely under $100 each, probably more like $60-70.
it will take some hours, thats for sure. if the car is rusty that will make the job even more aggravating.
also you need a spring compressor to swap the springs and all the other parts over.

Re: 2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

I did struts on my 05 Outback, sucked balls but got it done in under 8 hours.

Re: 2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

When I had my car in for an alignment at Les Schwab they said my struts were pretty worn and quoted $1,100 for it as well. I'd expect a lower cost at an independent shop.

Struts on Colorado cars is pretty easy. I have had mine out multiple times.

Re: 2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

I have a friend that has an Outback that lives in Indianapolis and I work on her car yearly when she comes through town. It has some rust, but the running gear surprisingly does not have a huge amount of rust. Of course, it all depends upon the car.

Re: 2002 Outback - cost to replace struts

It depends on whether or not the top hats/strut mounts are being replaced as well. On a high-mile car, I would consider this a must-do, especially the fronts.

However, $1100 is still pricey. I did it myself on my 9-2x in >6 hours with hand tools - a shop with a McPherson spring compressor can do each corner in less than an hour.
