Re: Miata RF

The PRHT was about 80# heavier, IMO it was a good tradeoff for the benefits. I think the RF is awesome, get me a Mazdaspeed version.

Re: Miata RF

Car has been built, he will prolly be taking delivery in early January.  He went and test drove a Fiat 124 Abarth and really liked it, but I think he is gonna stick with the Mazda.

Either way, it's mine in a couple years.  cool

I sat in a 124 and the headroom was inadequate.  It was worse than the '91 Miata I picked up for interim transportation.  I didn't bother to drive it.  I probably will drive the Abarth though.  I'm sure it makes great sounds.

I don't really understand the appeal of getting the Fiata considering the Miata makes about the same power with a far more reliable naturally aspirated motor, weighs less,  and IMO looks better.

Re: Miata RF

Turbo noises and styling.  Also not sure what a turbo swap could do to one of those things (prolly have to build the motor).

But I prefer the Miata to the Fiata.

Same thoughts, but I'll have paid off the ST by next year and have it as my practical car.  I can prolly get it for a steal of my pops like I did the 9-2x.  We shall see.

Raucous turbocharged hatchback - "my practical daily driver."

Re: Miata RF

Want that RF. Recently drove a 2016 Miata when I was out in San Fran through the mountains of Mt. Tamalpais. SO MUCH FUN. Also, I'd gladly drop 50K on having them build out an LS swapped Miata. Would leave it totally stock looking though. I love the idea of it being a 'sleeper' (can Miatas really be sleepers?).

Re: Miata RF

Save your money.  Pick up an R171 SLK55 AMG.  335HP 5.5L V8.  Low mileage 05's in great condition go for 20-25K. Everyone thinks they are a secretary's car until you flatten the loud pedal and disappear into the distance.  And it's hard to have more fun on mountain roads.  I won't sell mine until I am physically unable to climb in it.

ROFL

Oh yeah it's only 1,000 lbs heavier, a decade older, going to cost significantly more to maintain, and be a shittier driving experience.  Yeah let me get right on that hahahaha.

Re: Miata RF

According to that video, it only upped the weight by maybe 270 pounds. balance shifted from 53% front to 54% front.  2600lbs. wet. That's not much difference considering the suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, and better power ratio. 450hp to the rear wheels. That's a pretty stark difference compared to your SLK.

That being said, I'd be happy with either and cool points go to the SLK imo banana driving

Re: Miata RF

I'm sure the SLK is a fun car, but just different strokes for different folks.

Back to the RF, sounds like my dad will be getting it this month.  He's already got plans for a full clear bra of vinyl for the front half of the car and a set of snows, should be fun.

Re: Miata RF

SLK vs. Miata, definitely different deals.  If I physically fit smaller cars, like a Miata, I probably would have made a different purchase decision, though Boxster before Miata.  I sooooo wanted to fit in a Boxster, just not quite enough room.  You don't drive that car, you wear that car.

Having said that, do they stiffen up the structure on an LS converted Miata?   You can drop in the engine and upgrade the mechanicals, but I don't think the gnomes at Mazda were thinking 450  HP to the rear wheels when they developed the structure.   I still believe that you will get a better driving experience from an SLK55, where the structure and mechanicals were developed for that motor and it's extra weight.  You can get a good one in the $25K range.  Yes, parts and service are pricier.  But the R171 model has proven to be pretty bullet proof, a couple well known issues that are easily evaluated with a test drive and a good PPI, and easily (though expensively) mitigated if found.

Re: Miata RF

Saw it this weekend and it's much better looking in person than in pictures, also even smaller than I expected.

The silver looks better in person and the interior looks a bit more red in person as well.

Didn't get to ride/drive in it cause he is babying it on summer tires and I didn't get any pictures cause it was 5 degrees outside but more to come for sure.

I think he is going to lend the car to https://www.youtube.com/user/savagegeese for a review/video.
