Spoiler delete to fit roof box?

I need a roof box to carry skis and gear, but I'm constrained by the spoiler hitting the box when I open the hatch. One option is to drill new holes in my box to shift it forward, but I'm not crazy about the look. I'm wondering if I could remove the spoiler for ski season as a compromise. Has anyone done this before? Thoughts?

Re: Spoiler delete to fit roof box?

Do you already have the roof box? I have one that doesn't have clearance issues - might be worth going to your local REI (or other store that would sell roof boxes) and see if you can get some measurements in store to check clearance with the hatch.

Yeah, I have one already...picked up the Thule Frontier for cheap on Craigslist. Out of curiosity, which box do you have? The issue I ran into with the boxes that fit at my local store was the length of my skis (196). The Yakima Rocketbox 11 did fit, but I thought it looked dorky slammed forward.

Re: Spoiler delete to fit roof box?

I would recommend against removing the spoiler, there are quite a number of holes that would need to be plugged up there, plus the wiring for the brake light, not to mention it'd be illegal because of removing the third brake light.

Just move it forward or get another box.

Here's a pic of the area with the spoiler removed that I took when I was doing the 'spoiler mod' of putting spacer in to tilt it up some. I put rubber grommets in the holes and sealed with clear silicone caulking as well to prevent leaks.

Re: Spoiler delete to fit roof box?

Thanks, that is exactly the info I needed. I drilled new holes and the box now fits perfectly against an open hatch. It sticks out over the front but not too much. Will just need to put any somewhat heavy stuff in the back.

I have a Thule Ascent 1100 that I got probably about 5 years ago. If you didn't already drill new holes, I would have suggested dumping your box on craigslist and getting a different one, but it sounds like you've already gotten it sorted out!

My cargo box definitely sticks out a fair bit in the front and bounces around if it's empty and it's windy on the highway, but I've used it for 5 years with no issues. I bought the box specifically to carry long skis so it would definitely fit 196s - I have 184s and they fit with plenty of room to spare.

Here's what it looks like on the car:

Re: Spoiler delete to fit roof box?

I had shims between the crossbar and the bicycle trays for mine so that the spoiler wouldn't hit the rear tire of the bikes.  As I recall, I got some black HDPE stock 10mm thick and it was just right.
