Another dumb German car: Episode V

I forgot which ones I posted on here. But, after I sold my 06 Aero, picked up a tsx and then traded that in for an 09 Jetta TDi Sportwagen (dieselgate spec). Had that for a year or so and sold it because I lost my job and just took over my wife's lease (2013 Altima). During this time, I picked up a 00 Audi S4 and 00 BMW 323i wagon.

Since then, I moved to Raleigh and sold the S4, drove the Altima until I turned it in in June. I picked up another Jetta TDi to drive for the time being. I was able to bring the BMW down to Raleigh this past August in which it was sold a month later after I closed on my house. I also sold the TDi and made some cash on that due to the TDi buy back.

So now I had a dilemma on what to drive. I was thinking about picking up a cheap Jetta lease and finding a fun car. My wife said I was only allowed one car at this time. Normally, I do what I want, but this made sense. What I really wanted was a car with a manual transmission, HIDs, and a wagon. At the time, I was really contemplating getting a 335D. The problem is finding the exact spec I want (2011 M-Sport in White or Blue with non-tan interior). In the back of my mind, I was also thinking about getting a GTI as well due to it having similar specs to what I wanted and having a sporty ride that would work for a daily driver. The exact spec I'd want at the time was hard to find as well: 2016 S with manual, HID and Performance Pack. That configuration was order only.

Luckily, VW created a new trim line for 2017; the Sport. It has everything I wanted out of the GTI. Plus, now they are being heavily discounted if you go to the DMV area.  I got mine for $26,400 out-the-door ($29,200 MSRP). Currently, they can be had for about $24-25k. The MQB chassis is amazing and the engine handles mods very well, it's insane.

Anywho, here is the car when I picked her up from Stohlman VW.

I then delete the rear muffler and converted it to the golf style outlet as opposed to the dual outlet

https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5726/30611614646_26a6a0e9d7_b.jpgIMG_6009 by Garrett Colburn, on Flickr

I added an injen intake, and lowered it on basically rebranded ST XTA coilovers (KW V2) and threw on RPF1s in 18x8.5 +40 with 235/40 Conti Extreme DW tires. I've also done other little minor things including tweaking electronic items like lights and such. Way easier to modify that stuff compared to the snobaru.

And a BS photoshop attempt.

APR tunes make these cars silly quick.  APR gives free demo tunes which makes it even more hard to say no.

Thanks for sharing!  I actually might get a 2015-2016 GTI S now that my other car fell through.  I prefer the cloth over the leather personally.  Anything you don't like about it?

I'm going to hold off on tuning for the time being. If I do end up doing something along those lines, I'll either get a JB4 or a Cobb AP.

I would get the 2016 since it has the better radio. I'd make sure it had the lighting and performance package as well. The reason why I got the Sport is because it has the cloth seats which I love. As far as negatives are concerned, mainly the trunk being a bit small. Other quirks of the car I was able to recode using a vcds tool.

VW has a long history of LSD in their cars.  It started with the minibus:

Re: Another dumb German car: Episode V

Just looked into the 2017 Sports and a dealer in VA has them for $22-23k.  My local dealer only can do $26,900.

Where you find that?  Most GT's I've seen are still around $30k-ish

Re: Another dumb German car: Episode V

Yeah and I mean that's what it is listed at online, I kinda wanna go there and just start negotiating and see what I can get it for.

First things first though, I've got another free oil change at my dealer (although I really shouldn't have them touch my car again, but its free and its cold outside) so I'm gonna test drive a new GT while I'm there.

There are quite a few dealers in the VA area that can do that price. I flew in and it was the easiest thing to do since my local dealer would only do $500 off MSRP and they have a $600 doc fee on top.

Only problem I saw was that the online price they showed included $1000 for VW Loyalty (if you owned a VW before).  So the price went up $1,000 higher, then they have a $820 freight cost and $579 doc fee  unamused

Yeah it's a dumb game they play in that area. The only way to compare is to get the out the door prices from the dealers and go with the lowest.

Re: Another dumb German car: Episode V

The trunk is non-existent. I miss my rear doors but prefer the 2-door GTI look.

How's the muffler delete sound? Love the look of the single side exhaust exit. I'm not big on the dual look. I've been thinking of just retipping the stock exhaust to bigger tips and calling it a day.

Only ragrat on mine is no LP.  sadbanana

I'm going with a 2016 VW GTI S (sorry, no performance package or lighting) 6-speed 4 door in the carbon gray.  I wanted the S because of the cloth seats mainly.  It has 12k miles and is local.  Hopefully should be picking it up Saturday.

Muffler delete sounds pretty good. I didn't like the dual outlet exhaust especially since it's a 4 cylinder. I got some hate for it since it's a gti and not a "golf." But, I like it. Since our cars come with a 2.5" exhaust, there's really no reason to upgrade except the downpipe.

Hey, congrats if you decide to pick it up. Hopefully, you got it for a steal. It's a fun commuter and you should like it. The interior is so much nicer than our 92x counterparts.

The interior is really what drew me to that car as opposed to the Focus ST (I think the interior is butt ugly, sorry hammy and iamchris). This is going to be my only car so I needed something that would ride nice, have nicer interior, and also be a little fun too.  Plus I need to be able to put a hitch on it for my bikes and this one is capable, as opposed to the older Golf-R's and ST's

Re: Another dumb German car: Episode V

Yeah, I posted my opinion about the Focus ST/RS interior and there wasn't a warm reception to that notion.

And the fact people were liking the WRX interior over the others was a laugh riot.

I can't vouch for the others, but personally I was talking about from a simplicity stand point. IMO the VW interior is too busy, but obviously has far superior material quality and feel.
