Just Bought an Aero with Known Problems

Hey guys, I just bought a 2005 Aero with a couple known problems; to list them off:

1. Steering is hard (Rarely and randomly the steering will become normal and easy but its for a few seconds) , I don't know if its the PS pump or something else. I changed the fluid and nothing happened. The steering does make a groaning noise.

2.While stopped at a red light, The idle revs will sometimes almost drop down below 500 rpms with A.C on and then the Revs come back to normal. It also sometimes happens with the A.C off, but the drop isn't as bad, the revs also come back up.

Any suggestions, tips or solutions are greatly appreciated, thank you.

Sounds like you need a power steering pump, the rev drop sound normal to me.

Re: Just Bought an Aero with Known Problems

Certainly could be the ps pump, but there are a few other parts in the system that fail and are cheaper/easier to replace. The o ring on the pump fails all the time, and the hoses to/from the reservoir get rock hard and leak. One way to check for a leak is to have someone look in the reservoir with a bright light while another turns the wheel back and forth (car running wheels up in the air) and look for bubbles. Obviously be careful.

Re: Just Bought an Aero with Known Problems

Thank you guys for your responses and I also encountered one more issue. At higher speeds the steering wheel shakes like a 6/10 bad.
Is this related to the PS or is it something else?

definitely try these first: The o-ring is cheap and the hoses are a bit spendy at like $50 or something but totally worth it.
if you replace all those and then check the fluid and its still having issues, then it could be the pump itself which is annoying because they don't sell a rebuild kit, but you could probably botch one together with parts online
