Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

Another beautiful day racing up in wine country! Here's most of the field as seen from our garage spot:

(I just uploaded that, so it might be low quality until it finishes processing.)

We're going to be in the Monday overflow race, "Sears Even More Pointless."

What team are you driving with this time?

The old Volvo wagon that used to be the bobsled car....it's rethemed as Swedish Knievel.  I'll post pics later.

Ah, yes.  The first NASA day that I did, there was a Birkin S3 parked the second slot over.  He'd driven with that team earlier that year.  I think they had some mechanical difficulty that year, but am not sure.  We had enough of our own, and, as you might have noticed last year, that means everyone looks to me.

We've got the same car as last year, and even the same cylinder head (the one we raced with, not the one we started practice with - you might also remember *why* I was busy when you stopped by).

How's it going?  Kinda weird not raining?

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

If by weird you mean totally fantastic, then yes, it is super weird that there is no rain. biggrin

And things are going well. We had a throttle cable issue, but smooth sailing other than that.  And our transponder was screwed up so our current standing is in flux depending on what they do for us.

But other than that, life is good.

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

I'm sure it was your car there at the track, about 100 feet from where we started to set up.  I thought I might miss you (and I did) so I put a card on your driver's door.  All I had was one from the forum for my new car.

I did see the Swedish Knievel car drive by in the paddock.  How did the weekend go for the Team?

We got into a garage, and are hoping tomorrow is as nice as today was.

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

Huh, the card must've fallen out....sorry I missed that.  The race was great.  We only had one minor mechanical failure with the bracket holding the throttle cable pulley assembly.  Quick fix.  Other than that, smooth sailing!  It was a great weekend.

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

We made the first page of the Car & Driver blog again, with two important distinctions from last year:

1)  It's only a picture this time;  no text
2)  The car is on track and running, as opposed to in the garage and in pieces

The SuperSaab is center of the top picture.  Yes, the one with zebra stripes.

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

Additionally, there were only 69 cars on track, instead of 174 that started the two-day event.  Track time was great, and mostly open.

Of course, we were crippled by a self-inflicted wound.  The car owner decided to replace the exhaust with a 3" straight system.  We were making full boost by 2000 rpm, and that put air flow so far outside the design parameters of the old Bosch K-Jetronic that we were limited to about half throttle and had a working rpm range of 2200-3400.

Still, it kept going, however poorly, and we completed the event.  At the start of the last hour, we were running fifth in Class B and 27th overall.  We had a 20 minute repair in the last hour and surely slipped a little, but saw the checkered from on track, under our own power.  Two of our three drivers completed with no black flags.  The one who did get one got hit on the side of the rear bumper by an overzealous competitor, but it still went on our record.  Oh, well.  That's LeMons.

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

I figure I'll post my new LeMons vids here.  This was really the only exciting thing to happen to me today:

Car was fine mechanically; rear door, not so much.  biggrin

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

I thought you weren't racing.  Had I known I might have gone to spectate instead of installing stainless steel brake lines on my car and cracking one of the hard lines.  facepalm

Car is now unserviceable, and I'd down to the most mental bike ever made as my sole transportation.  Not sure whether that's  banana or  sadbanana

Re: Kornfeld's LeMons Thread

I did another race a couple of weeks ago up at Thunderhill, which is now the longest road course in the US.  It was freaking awesome.  Tons of elevation changes, big sweeping turns, tight hairpins, long straights, it has it all.

The unique piece is that we set the world record at this race for most race cars to start a single event.  There were 242 cars registered, but only star 216 took the green flag.  Starting field:

http://www.murileemartin.com/UG/LTH14/0462-Thunderhill14-IMG_2190.jpg

While the field was huge, it was completely manageable because the track was so long.  Aside from the 100+ degree heat both days, it was my favorite race so far.

I didn't really catch any exciting on track incidents, but this video from someone else is a stand out for me (skip to 0:25):

eek

I did two back to back laps with miraculously little traffic that were within a tenth or so of each other that were my fast laps.  Here's one:

Anyhow, it was a great time.  up up
