Amazon has a deal on a Transcend TS16GDP200 16GB Drive Pro 200 dashcam.  It's $109 with free shipping.  I'm gonna give it a try.  Bought the suction cup mount for an additonal $15.

Re: Dashcam Thread

i bought a dash cam about 8 months ago.  i got a g1w, which is sold under a few different names and is the same one iamchris has.  mine is the WIIIIIIIICKED (yaaa maaan) HD G1W http://www.amazon.com/WickedHD-Dashboar … words=g1w.  i can't remember why i selected this one of all the g1w's available (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_ … ywords=g1w), but i guess i'm glad i did.  the g1w works well and is well reviewed by dashcam reviews (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/g1w-gs108/), although they suggest buying the cheaper one with the capacitor instead of a battery (so it doesn't melt your shit if you ever get in a crash).
as i said i bought the wickedhd one from the seller foscam digital.  last month i had it in the house so i could change the time/date, which reset for some reason and my toddler launched the thing into a wall and it broke.  i sent an email saying it wasn't working and i wasn't sure why.  foscam replied and said it had a year warranty, gave me a shipping label and i sent it back for a replacement, which i got back last week despite sending an original back that was obviously subject to trauma.  so i would recommend buying from foscam if possible, as these things are cheap and some people do report getting ones that don't function and have issues with the sellers.

as a former claims adjuster i can't recommend having a dash cam enough.  about 1/4 of the accidents i investigated were word vs. word, in which case an insurance company will default to the word of their customer.  in a minor accident, one of these will save you your deductible and rate changes.  in a major accident, it could be invaluable.  on top of that they're just cool to have.  the first weekend i had mine i passed a convoy 100 or so lamborghinis on the thruway.

if i ever do upgrade it would be for one with a rear-facing cam (dealt with a lot of multiple car rear-end claims).

Re: Dashcam Thread

How do you have yours set up? I've test mounted mine in the FoST just plugged into the cigarette outlet. I'm not happy with the location or how much it sticks out, so much so that I'm considering a lower profile one with a rear-mounted camera.

Re: Dashcam Thread

i currently do have it suction cupped to the windshield so it hangs just below the mirror. it drove me nuts at first, but i got used to it.  my charger was long enough that i could conceal it along the headliner, down the a-pillar then under my mat to the console.  i wouldn't mind hardwiring it, but haven't gotten around to doing that.  i'm trying to decide if this mount would make it any less obtrusive.
i'd prefer one of the ones that mount over your mirror, but i have an auto-dimming mirror.

for reference, here is a clip of video from the drive i mentioned before when i literally saw about 100 lambozzz.  it looked better before uploading it to youtube.  you can barely make them out, as they're driving in the opposite direction and you start noticing them around 25 seconds in.

Re: Dashcam Thread

White cargo van almost hits me on the freeway.

At :28 Van makes an illegal right turn.
At 3:00 Van cuts off a silver sedan.
At 4:03 I honk my horn and show the van driver that I got him on video.
At 4:51 The van driver (pissed off that I got him on video) cuts across 3 lanes and almost hits me (I had to brake to prevent a collision).

I submitted this video to HPD (Honolulu Police Department) as evidence.

Looks like pretty typical traffic, with pretty typical traffic antics.

I haven't heard Dabarge on the radio in a long time, though, so that stands out.  Can you be cited for playing that?  tongue

Cited for awesomeness?. I have an entire spotty station built around that song. It will always remind me of The Last Dragon.

Re: Dashcam Thread

I just bought 3 of these, getting them next week. I'm going to put the 803 I bought last year as my rear-facing cam. I'm installing the other 2 in my mother's car.

I've had few issues with the 803, so the next model up sounds good. I like the form and size of the unit. Easy to navigate menus, gps comes on within 2-5 minutes. I like how the unit is tiny and doesn't take up much room. Once in a while it will crash when powering on, requiring disconnecting from power source until the battery dies. This hasn't happened since I switched SD cards though. Night quality is not superb in darkness, no IR. New model should be better. $65  cool

Backstory- Mom is the slowest driver on the road, on every road. She's 65. And has never gotten a ticket. Ever. She complains of assholes tailgating, then passing, and then cutting her off while brake-checking, sometimes purposefully staying in front and going slower for a minute then taking off. I feel that if she gets distracted or makes contact with another car because of this she could be considered at fault. I'll post my thoughts on the new cams once I've had them for a while.  embeer

Re: Dashcam Thread

So many knockoffs out there, buying a legit version of any of these units may be the hardest part. And many use the same handful of cases so they can physically appear identical but perform very differently. I would love to buy a few newer ones, my 9-2x already has switched power to the rear view because it has a compass in the mirror.

Surprise, all 9-2x have switched power to the rear view area.  Most just have it tucked away in the headliner smile

I'm not sure what is meant by this, since they're all sold under generic "Xtreme D4sHc4M" type names.  It's not like you're shopping for the Sony series dashcam and get swindled into buying the Chinese version.  They're all Chinese versions and they all work well, I wouldn't worry too much about pouring over reviews or getting the latest one.  Actually, I'd go for an older, tried and true model.

This market is littered with bad knockoffs, it's not hard to imagine a quality $100 camera having sensors, lenses... swapped out for cheaper inferior parts. You won't be able to easily tell the difference, but the product will suck.

Same here, but forgot to get a 12v to 5v converter so I'll have to wait a few days for that.

Re: Dashcam Thread

Driving to volleyball last night and a strange incident. I pull up to the stop light and notice the Audi across the intersection pulling a u-turn. After that my attention moves to the cyclist crossing the intersection, then my light turns green. I take off faster than the car on my right then notice the Audi stopped in my lane. I have enough distance to pull in front of the car on my right and go around the Audi. My initial thought was they were having some kind of mechanical issue. But as I went around him I found out different because he launches the damn thing and comes blowing by me. Once I heard the tires spin I saw him catching me in my mirror and thought about punching it to give him a short run. But I knew there was traffic ahead and didn't want to risk anything, but he went blowing by me when I was doing 55-60, then he turned off at the next intersection.

I have it titled A7 but I think it was an S7

P.S yes I listen to sports talk radio, because I hate damn near all the music on the radio these days. And those are the guys I won the Super Bowl tickets from.

Re: Dashcam Thread

I'm sure he was screwing around doing launches, but kind of a dick move to come to a complete stop with traffic right there. Kids used to organize drag races on Washington Ave Ext years ago.

I know the guys from Shift518 used to.

I was very surprised when I took off and then noticed he was at a dead stop. I can only imagine that when he turned off he was going to swing around for another one.
