2015 Autocross Season

Mine started today.  It was a mediocre start but being my first time in the blue Miata it went decently enough.  There were 6 Miatas total out there, I believe I placed 1st in PAX, results will be up later tonight.  Great turnout, decent course, sunburnt face and the car is running pretty well.  I need to crank up the front Konis and see how it does tomorrow.

Who else is cone killing this year?

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

I'm not running in any seasons, but I'll be doing a few auto-xs with different clubs this summer so if I decide to get more into it next year I know which I want to participate in.

Gonna tear up G-Steet

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

Ran in XE today (street class bump group so I used my ES PAX), in the class it was me, my co-driver, and my co-driver for tomorrow who was driving his FoST today.  He beat us by 4 seconds raw, more with PAX.  I am an average driver, he is a better than average driver, but regardless the FoST in GS is a force to be reckoned with.

Lots of options around chicago burbs:

- Miata club will get you the most runs on any given day.  There's always some buffoon here for  :big grin: and lack of dictation makes for interesting times.
- TSSCC for their professionalism and excellent courses.
- Audi was nice as there were so few people.
- BMW's parking lot in Maywood park is terrible - avoid those days. Their other events in Schaumburg are great.
- SCCA millwaukee and chicago are decent, but pretty rules and reg heavy.

I've yet to do a Tirerack 2 day event in Southbend, IN with any of these clubs but would love to go some time.

I'm a club whore - just matching up events with days I have available.  Hope to see you out there!

I think my first event of the year will be the TSSCC event at the Sears Center on 5/3. You should go!

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

Last season's events in PAX I was 31/59, 24/47, 19/52, 17/46, and 13/50 (I'd disregard this one, I got one of the few dry runs of the day).  Raw I was 44/59, 36/47, 35/52, 36/46, and 22/50 (again, disregard).

Yesterday in PAX I was 30/73, today I was 24/61.  Raw I was 44/73 and 45/61.  I feel like I should be driving better.  Lots of Evos, M3s and S2000s, but there is a 92 Miata that runs in STS that fucking destroys me.  Beat me by 5.5 goddamn seconds today.  Fustrated.

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

I'll come out and watch you guys (in the cobra maybe?).

I really don't know why but I have not attraction whatsoever for autocrossing. I like almost everything motorsport but autocross does absolutely nothing. I wonder why. To be fair, I have never driven it, which would change my views I would think. I'm a sucker for a fun race track though.

I'm with you.  I should give it a shot, who knows? Seems to be sort of popular.  biggrin

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

I think it depends a lot on location.  Aside from the local autocross, rallycross, and hill climb events, there isn't really another option for competitive driving within a 5 hour drive or so.  It's not my first choice, but it's also not my last.

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

Autocross is the best way to enjoy your car and not really wear it like the track does, anyone who considers themselves an enthusiast should give it a try.  Just try to find a well run group or a car club of your car type (they make tracks favorable to your car type ie. Miata Club, BMW Club, etc)

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

I picked up a Racequip Pro Model for this season.  I've used it for a kart outing and 2 events thus far, I'm a fan.  Light, comfortable, good fit.

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

Meh, the cheapest DOT open face they'll allow.

It's not a real concern, is it? Who the heck gets injured at autocross as a driver?

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

I mean if the price difference between the cheapest and a slightly lighter/better quality one isn't that much I'd like the better one...

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

arrow-up When I was buying my motorcycle helmet, after safety, the most important thing was fit/comfort. The last thing you want is to be fumbling with the helmet while driving or getting distracted because the fit isn't right and it obstructs view.

I can see how in auto-x a simple open face would be more than sufficient so again I'd be more concerned about fit/comfort. Try on a couple in store before pulling the trigger if you can to make sure you have the right size and shape for your head.  up

Re: 2015 Autocross Season

Depending on how strictly your region follows the rules you'll need Snell certification.  Our safety guys are sticklers, can't run without the right helmet.  The SA2000 certs will be invalid as soon as the SA2015 helmets come out (probably halfway through the season).  M or SA certs from 2005 or later will be good for a while.  My Racequip is an SA2010, my backup/passenger HJC is M2005.

Yeah I don't wanna wait for the SA2015.  SA2010 should last me at least 5 years.

Do you have this Racequip?

B/C event insurance (for SCCA) is partially based upon the helmet std (and trained Solo Safety Stewards), I can't imagine any SCCA Region not be checking helmets, particularly in a transition year. If you want to run SCCA, get a helmet.  And even though the gubermint or DOT doesn't age out helmets, the materials do break down over time, so if you ride (motorcycles, bikes and boards, too), your helmets should also be upgraded every ten years.

Cheap, super competitive and like a lot of things it's all in the details. Don't try it, I don't like crowded days. Plus, you'll prolly suck  star
