Re: Love for the Saabaru

Ive got some a love story and an anti-love story.

Starting with the anti-love because its rather funny. There is this younger kid that hangs out at my local mini mart and every time I roll up to grab a 6er he tells me "nice fake Subaru!" The problem with this kid is he drives a late 90's V6 mustang!  banghead I just tell him to use google every time he says something.

Onto the love story. I came up to another gas station a few weeks back and there was an older gentleman driving a Saab 93 aero. He told me that I had a pretty sweet car and asked me what year it was. I told him it was an 06 and he got really excited. He clearly knew about them and it turns out he used to work for SAAB and he always loved the 92x and Saabs in general. It was fun to find someone over the age of 50 who appreciated the 92x.

People that love Saabs are probably more likely to be over 50 than under.

Very true the general Saab crowd is older. I just feel like most don't really recognize/appreciate the 92x. I guess its their loss if they dont!  embeer

My brother and sister shared a 1996 V6 Mustang as their first car. ha. Until my sister fishtailed it and ran it into a ditch/mailbox.

Edit: fishtailed because it was raining ... not due to an excess of power. haha let's make that clear.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

This morning, while trying to get my car serviced at the Subaru dealer (that's a totally different thread), an older salesman walked up to my car and asked if it was mine. He remarked at the fact that it had been forever since he had seen a 9-2x, and that he had come out to just take a look at it. I was annoyed at the time, but I appreciated the compliment so I calmed my demeanor and chatted with him for a moment. I told him how I knew I wanted a wrx, but I didn't want something that had been, as my dad would say, "rode hard and put up wet." I told him that I drove all the way to Columbus Ohio for it, and that it was, essentially, a one owner car (the guy I bought it from bought it for an amazing price and just flipped it). He was a nice guy, I wish I had met him under more desirable circumstances.

Driving around looking at houses this weekend I saw a shitbox with two older teens waiting at the cross light.  I was turning left towards them and got a big thumbs up from the driver as I went around.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

arrow-up Ha, nice. Went to the local cars and coffee this Saturday and two teenagers were lingering around my car talking and pointing at it and the WRX I parked next to. ha, I think I've made it in the car scene now.

Also, when I pulled up at the cars and coffee, another WRX owner came up to me when I got out and said 'hey, clean swap man' to which I had to inform him he was wrong w/ the conventional elevator pitch. ha. Lost track of how many people have said that to me thinking I swapped in a subie motor.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

At a local meet I parked in between a blobeye wrx wagon and a WRB widebody wrx sedan, someone looked at me funny for going in between the two.

Another guy who I think owned a black STI jumped in and started telling the Saabaru story and how awesome the car is, he even said something about the steering rack. I felt awesome and my friend with me scowled because it was the first time someone had really known what the car was and liked it.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

I've only owned his thing for 2 months and I've been getting a LOT of love from the Subaru community around town. It caught me off guard about 2 hours after I signed the title I was getting waves like I was in the jeep club or something. So far responses fall into 3 categories. 1. Clueless never even saw me 2. The neck snap. obviously knows its a wrx or something but something just isn't the same, they need to take a second look 3. The guys who know just what you are and even though they are driving a brand new STI they want to drive slow in the left lane to gawk at your car. I had #3 yesterday for the entire 30 minute ride home from work smile

I'm happy to wave back but many people are quite perplexed about what it is.

I've also had a LOT of people at work come up to me and say "duuuuddeeeee wtf did you buy a Saab for?" Then I have to explain that its no more Saab then a geo was a Chevy.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

Ya, I find those same 3 responses even just within the hood-scooped Subaru owners, either they're driving a new WRX and don't have a clue what my saabaru is, mutual dueces and head nod, or drive past slowly looking over as they pass to see if I have a hoodscoop. ha.

Got a weird reaction while on the freeway today...

Minding my own in the middle lane and a lowered Civic hatch zooms up to me and starts going my speed. I look over and he was doing some gesture with his shirt, like pulling on his shirt, and pointing to my car (what looked like the wheel area?) while seemingly trying to say something to me. I had my window up so I just gave a casual head nod like thanks I guess? Then he downshifts and gives me a ricer-flyby. ha.
He was either:
a) in some weird way just saying he liked my car
b) my white wheels are as minty fresh as his green shirt
c) he wants to trade me my wheels for his green shirt
d) oh green shirt, green means go, was he trying to race me?
e) all of the above
Maybe Snaab9-2, our resident freeway racer can shed some light. haha.

Re: Love for the Saabaru

I got into it a bit with that brand new sti. He showed me very fast how delusional I was when I thought my car might be "quick."  New parts are needed....I'm not burning nearly enough fuel to keep up with a machine like that

Took the saabaru to St. Augustine this weekend. Almost took the girlfriends kia for mpg reasons but glad we didnt because not only did we drive past a silver aero there by the light house, we also ran into another Eric who drives a linear. Very cool weekend! much saabaru love!!

The first day I drove my new saabaru around my town, two guys in a miata and a guy in a GTI with its windows down smiled and just yelled "SAABARUUUU" as they passed me. It was pretty great.

Taking the off-ramp and driving down the service road Sunday, I looked over and saw someone gesticulating wildly at my car and sticking his head out the passenger window.  Apparently he was very excited at something.
