'06 Red 5MT Aero ... 109K ... questions about out of state buying ...

I'm currently out of the country (Germany, my husband is overseas military) and I'm looking to have my brother fly to pick up an '06 Red 5MT I found with 109K ... they're asking $7K.

It's being taken by the dealer to local Subaru dealer today for compression test, test drive by a mechanic, visual inspection, poking around for leaks and torn/broken things.  My request, and I'm paying for it before buying a plane ticket, etc.

Looks pretty stock ... untinted windows, clean interior.  Has seat heaters, a trailer hitch, boost gauge/oil temp gauge (looks like a clean install not a WTF random bolt in job).  In pics, paint looks like it could use clay bar and a couple coats of wax ... wheels look like they weren't run along every curb possible ... no dents or angry ex-girlfriend key marks.

Dealer picked it up at an auction, so they don't know history - they say it's a clean/good car (but they always say that).

Other than the compression test/once-over by a Subaru dealer, any suggestions for a potential out of state purchase before I finalize the deal (pending the inspection).

They don't know if timing belt/pulleys/tensioner have been changed, so I will do that ASAP.

I had a 2001 2.5RS with 276K on the original motor and sold it when we headed overseas (I was pregnant and the baby seat wouldn't fit in the back and even if it had fit, with a 2-door would have been a giant PITA) ... I've been itching to get back into a Subaru for months, and have always loved the Saabaru.

Sounds like you know your stuff bout Subarus and are taking the right approach with regards to compression/visual/test-drive/inspection done by an independent mechanic. And ya, if timing belt hasn't been done that will need to be the first thing serviced.

Also... SRR in your description, are you referring to the Subaru name for the Brilliant Red - 22G - San Remo Red?

lol, no worries. I'm sure SRR is easily recognizable in those more familiar with subies - had to search here to find what you were meaning. SRR .... hmmm is that a special 1/1 performance package!?? ha  driving

Personally I'd put a down payment, but not full, and buy a round trip ticket.  Though as I say that, 3 months ago I bought a 1 way train ticket up the east coast and traveled with $6k cash to buy mine.  The gauges are my main concern, as well as being picked up at auction.  You should probably run a CarFax if you haven't already.  And it may be paranoid, but ask for a picture of the VIN plate to confirm engine code, color, etc.
