Track Day: Summit Point, WV

So this will be my last track day of the season. I was supposed to go to a TrackDaze event last weekend but the stupid Hurricane (Joaquin) changed those plans and they had to reschedule the event. Unfortunately the new date happens to be just about the same day our baby is due so I had to cancel.  mad

Lucky for me my buddy at Aston/McLaren got me into their upcoming track event! Check out the lineup:
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/v/t1.0-9/12079681_10100320264015401_2679880134919561960_n.jpg?oh=e555700c682c52c3adcb37266df00b6b&oe=56D06DA9

The look on everyone's face when they step out of their fancy Aston, Ferrari, McLaren, and see me in my Saabaru....priceless.  biggrin

Here's something you don't see at a HPDE event everyday. I was pretty hyped to get to pass this on the track (once in a life time) but was even happier riding behind him and listening to the amazing sounds this piece of history was making.

arrow-up  up    The ride behind the GT40 (real or continuation?) must've been something.  Did you manage to talk him into giving you a ride?

I was told it is a continuation but that it uses the original parts (pretty sure GT40 is owned by an outside company, not Ford, hence the new car being just a GT) so that it is not considered a "kit" car but isn't technically an original. Does that make sense? I probably effed that all up, admittedly I'm not an expert on older American muscle cars.

This is by all means one of my top 5 favorite cars of all time. I felt like a kid just looking at it. To be honest, I was too ashamed to ask for a ride. It was also not the best day (track was still wet) and the driver hadn't driven the car on track before so he was taking it very easy, hence why I was able to pass him on track.

I will definitely try to talk my way into getting a ride from the F430 on the above list and maybe one of those 650S' this Monday. I've never been in either of those before.

Re: Track Day: Summit Point, WV

arrow-up  that is the meaning of continuation, same applied to Continuation CXS Shelby Cobra's, which retain Shelby as mfg as well as production date  unamused.  I think GT40 is retained by Ford, but doesn't apply to the new cars by choice.

Yeah, I get being scared to ask.  If it's a continuation, it's still worth in the millions.  And most likely not a great car to learn in the wet, although by all reports an easy car (comparatively) to drive vs. it's contemporaries   (F330, Lola T70, Chapparel, etc.)

Re: Track Day: Summit Point, WV

up wasn't sure if that was the definition of a continuation, thanks for clarifying that.

Speaking of more money than you know what to do with. These two cars were parked next to us for this last event. The Viper TA (1 of 93) was the husband's and the green 650S was driven by the wife:

Re: Track Day: Summit Point, WV

Haha, yeah those people struggle on the daily. I don't envy them having to keep up with all those expensive things and trying to figure out where to unload the next big pile of money. Must be terrible.

This thing made me giggle in a childish manner every time I lapped it:

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/12144720_10100322109546941_3063771894833533488_n.jpg?oh=2453258b8a579c6adcfd176fe79f5c8a&oe=56D27CCD

I tried explaining to my father-in-law (not a car guy) that it was a Bentley made for the track. He said, "that doesn't make any sense". It really doesn't.

This Superleggera though....

Re: Track Day: Summit Point, WV

arrow-up I think I wanna get adopted or something. I'LL help them folks figure out how to spend their money. It'll be my favor to them  biggrin

The funny part, Bentley's early history was all in racing. They, like Ferrari and Porsche, only sold road cars to finance their racing...right up until Roller bought them and emasculated them. In respects to heritage, both brands are mere shadows of what they once were. Oh, and the Germans won at least that part of the war.

Re: Track Day: Summit Point, WV

I love Summit Point. I have many fond memories there doing PCA track days with my dad as a kid.

Can you give us a summary of how your car did and the dynamics between it and the others out there. Any interesting back and force with other cars?

Thanks for sharing!

Haha unfortunately my dad isn't rich like a lot of the others in PCA. He just always wanted a 911 and worked his way up to it by driving a beat to shit Jeep Cherokee until he could afford a base boxster, then got a base Cayman, and finally about 2 years ago got a base 2005 997 Carrera. I'm definitely fortunate to have been raised in the car hobby though, and have had tons of great car related experiences with him over the years. Here are a couple pics of just a few of our yearly trips we try to take.

Re: Track Day: Summit Point, WV

arrow-up  checkmark  while my dad always cared for our cars, he was never really "into" cars or driving. Still, we shared adventures, mostly in the garage. My last great car memory with my dad (he passed 10 y.a.) was him helping me replace my Audi 200's heater core, an "adventure" that took over 10 hrs.  Good times, cherish all of the ones you have with your dad, they'll never happen again!
