Rims for winter tires

Thinking about getting some winter rubber for my 92x Aero. It has the Origional 17" rims on it now with all seasons that i plan on keeping on it for the 3 seasons. What is the consensus- 17" or 16" for snows? Will 16" clear my stock breaks? What about STI brembos if I go that rout in the future? I will be looking for these used, so what years/car combo are compatible with ours?

Re: Rims for winter tires

If you plan getting brembros then plan getting 17s to fit over the brakes.  If you get the 4 pots fronts brakes then the 16s from most other subarus will clear with a 3 mm spacer.

Re: Rims for winter tires

I'm using a set of 16" WRX wheels, but I have a 2.5i. So brake clearance isn't an issue.

What he said.  BTW, the Suby labeled 4-pot/2-pots are also Brembos, but most people are referring to STi Gold Brembos (bigger rotor, bigger caliper, more swept area and torque, WON'T clear most 16's except maybe SSR Comps) when calling brakes "Brembos", b/c they're labeled as such. Tinted, may I ask why you are considering STi Brembos?

Re: Rims for winter tires

If I were to go with a 16 inch rim what would my break upgrade options be?

What Size Snows do you recommend for 16" rims? (I would think they would need to keep the same diameter as my spare should I have to use it? )

Re: Rims for winter tires

WRX (not STI Brembos). Could do the H6 rear upgrade. And why the need for a brake upgrade?  If for track events, you may have to swap brakes btw seasons. Otherwise search this forum. Plenty of options w/o huge brakes unless you're looking for bling.

Tire size, stock 16's 205/55-16 (easy to find) or maybe 215/55-16 if you want a more stable dry setup that'll have hard to find tires.  Don't forget Scoob 16's are only 6.5" wide.

Re: Rims for winter tires

The big STi Brembo is a no go with 16" wheels, 4/2 pot is possible to run 16" wheels but will require the use of spacers to add adequate clearance.

Re: Rims for winter tires

I have some 16s off maybe an outback, work perfectly for stock brakes. I don't think they clear anything bigger though.

Re: Rims for winter tires

I currently have the 4 pots with 16's for winter and clear just fine. That being said, they are not the stock rims and are 16x7.

Re: Rims for winter tires

arrow-up the 4-pot issue with Sube/Saabaru factory 16 X 6.5's is backspace clearance, not radial. It's easily cured with a hubcentric spacer such as those from H&R.

Are hub centric spacers bad for wheel bearings? I've heard mixed reviews about them, especially on our 5x100's. Always wondered, because it seems like a viable route if I ever get sick of the drags I currently have.

Re: Rims for winter tires

arrow-up go for the Porsche 901 platform 30 mm or more spacers, and yeah, could be a problem.  5 mm, no problem, 10 mm might be the limit, but being that they're being used for low grip seasonal snows, my bet is the added stress will be minimal.
