Just brought home a new to me 92x Aero 100k miles with engine noise. Was diagnosed as rod knock, but might be something else. Plans to fix the issues, then decide fate. I have a garage Queen 2004 STI with 24k miles and tons of improvements. New to Saab kinda but not Subaru.

You should sell the shell to someone less sassy than you.

So looking at JDM 2 liter engines.........pretty sure Rod knock in this one.

Hey that's a good looking wrb STi, makes me miss my ej207 bugeye wagon that I just sold, it had RPF1 too, mine were gold.
What's happening with the newly acquired 92x ? Plans ?

Thanks Lucille (STi) has been a ton of fun, she will be ignored for a while as the 92X will get attention........right now researching JDM205 engines. Plan is once engine acquired to get engine swapped sometime in August. Get new rear struts which were included in sale swapped, go over any other issues. Drive for a period of time.

Well right now I'm leaning towards forged pistons and rebuilding the existing motor. At least it will be a known quantity and not have to deal with ordering/shipping and unknown quantity to me (aka 205)
So parts list is coming together. I'll most like pull engine third week of July and go from there.
I might even consider pulling the STi intercooler and non cracked 24k mile VF39 turbo and injectors off the STi and tossing them on this build! Mmmmmmmm.
Also plan to install rear tophats and struts, powdercoat the stock wheels and maybe get decent tires installed.

After pricing parts and machining costs have switched gears and most likely will be ordering a JDM EJ205 engine with 24K on it next week. Hopefully it will arrive in two weeks and I can get the swap done in a week with my schedule so sometime in August car should be driveable again.

Well fning missed out on the 24K motor. 51K motor coming instead and did confirm flakes in engine oil of OEM engine Tuesday.
Also discovered cannot open liftgate from outside and rear package area is stuffed with new strut parts. So have to play with that later to figure out what is wrong.

The liftgate release getting stuck is a very common complaint on these cars, a quick search will give you some options for diagnosing/fixing

Thanks, I did a search after posting and located tips. Going to try releasing first and parts ordering replacing later.

Got the liftgate open and lubed the handle, seems to work fine now.
Got the JDM205 engine, ordered couple of weeks ago Wednesday, received it same week on Friday. The following week had the old engine pulled, but had to prep the STi for a track day. Completed the track day Saturday and got the old engine on the engine stand last night, pulled the pan and low and behold the majority of rod #4's bearing material is in the bottom of the oil pan. I have a knock video.....hope to have the JDM engine installed in the next two weeks so I can drive this thing to work out the bugs and be able to drive it to the Subaru Shootout in Byron Il in September.

Wow, three months later, finally about ready to install that JDM engine. Just need to change plugs, install flywheel and clutch pull car in and drop it into the Saabaru. Very excited, will keep my mind off the other bullshit in my life.

Got the 205 into the car, now all I need to do is redress it, add oil/coolant and attempt to fire it up. I'll rewire for AVCS later.

Keep it going !
