FS: 05' Aero 5MT - Arctic Silver - 103k - $8500

As much as I love this thing, I'm moving back into Philly soon and don't really need an extra car, so I'm selling my extremely clean 5 speed '05. I've kept it pretty much stock since I bought it last September, focusing on maintenance over mods. It's definitely in better shape than when I got it.

^^ Note that the broken left taillight has since been replaced along with full professional bumper respray. As seen in newer photos below arrow-down

For more photos and video, check out the album available HERE.

Mileage: 102,500 and rising as a DD.
Exterior: Arctic Silver, paint is average with a few small nicks. No dents or damage. OEM Enkei 16s have some curb rash.
Interior: Spotless. Apart from inexplicably missing a rear headrest, it's pristine in there.
Options: Rare 5MT (manual), Cold Weather Package

Upgrades:
Kartboy Short shifter
Rallyarmor UR mudflaps
All coolant and Vacuum hoses replaced with Mishimoto/OEM parts at 100k
Roof Rack Added (though I may be keeping it)
Pioneer Bluetooth/USB Stereo Head Unit
1.25" Rear Hitch
Front Grille Plasti-Dipped Black

History/Maintenance:
Clean Carfax: I'm the 3rd owner. Car was previously in VA then CT.
All Fluids changed at 90k (Coolant again changed at 100k).
Brakes/All Season tires are in good shape
New Duralast Gold Battery 2/16
I believe it has the original clutch, but it still feels very stiff with a high biting point.
A/C and heat work well. Just tightened squealing A/C belt.
No suspension creaks/rattles.
No noticeable coolant/oil leaks.

Concerns:
Timing Belt still needs to be done by 105k
Had a tiny spot of typical 1/4 panel surface rust, which has been sanded out and repainted
Occasional heat shield/exhaust/hitch rattles

Asking $8500, which should be fair for the condition, especially given how trashed a lot of "real" WRXs at that price tend to be.

Does not compute. TB is way past due based on time not miles. Could go at any minute.

Is there a history of Subaru timing belts breaking due to age? I'm not aware of it, I've replaced a few very high mileage and 10+ year old belts that looked great. I've seen 105 months (~8.5 years) thrown around the internet but haven't seen it in SOA literature.  On this car I'd be more worried about the rear quarter panel rust that was "fixed", that rust starts from the inner fender so what you see on the outside is just the tip of the iceberg.  And of course the strut towers, always the strut towers.

RE: dshack. God forbid you use this as a teaching moment, rather than an opportunity to embarrass me for knowing less than you about something that is apparently a matter of opinion rather than fact. But no, it's cool. Sorry I was too busy earning a law degree to learn that little tidbit. Keep up the good work. You're making the internet proud one keystroke at a time.

As far as the rust goes, Snowphun, I peeled back the fender-liner first to see if it was all the way through, and didn't see anything. So I sanded it down to bare metal on the outside, and repainted the spot. No visual rust on the outside of strut towers. I haven't pulled them out to look up on the inside though. Take that info as you will.

Wow. We'll just chalk this one up to having a tough day or something, eh?

In related secondhand knowledge, my current boss used to run a testing lab at Gates rubber here in Denver, and he said there's no reason to think that the timing belt is a ticking time bomb when it hits 105k/105mo. That guideline was created already taking into account how much damage a broken timing belt can cause (meaning it's a more conservative replacement schedule than something less catastrophic like oil). It also is generated assuming the absolute worst conditions like a car that was driven hard all the time in the Arizona desert. Like I said, it's secondhand info, but it's from a very solid source. He was literally doing life cycle testing on timing belts and also often did testing on customer failed belts. He said he never saw a failed one that was anywhere near the recommended life - it was often double the life or more.

That's not to say you should ignore the maintenance interval - you shouldn't. That's true for all of the recommended intervals.

Re: FS: 05' Aero 5MT - Arctic Silver - 103k - $8500

Wow, did not realize the storm my simple response would create! Wtfmpl, didn't mean any offense, but wow. FYI, I'm in the middle of grad school myself.

My original point was that construing the sale as if you had done the work to catch up the car on maintenance just isn't true as the single biggest maintenance item remains to be done. Having bought a car in that exact situation 5 months ago, I wished I'd known that when I was buying. I ended up doing the TB myself to save money (did it in an underground parking deck at my school in fact).

Yesssss good eye! I knew you'd find a way to spot the scam. P.S. Scott Kozicki says he knows you.

oh and dshack no worries. the internet hate machine is a two way street, and often far more outraged at comments (without considering the tone or context) than it should be. I may have been guilty of that.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That's also part of why I mentioned it in the ad, so whoever gets it knows what they're getting into. I'd do it this summer but have neither the $$$ nor time (bar exam prep) to get on it before the sale.

In a hilarious twist. I went to carmax out of curiosity, fully expecting to get hilariously low balled. Friends' guesses as well as my own were all $around $4.5k. NOPE. Fucking $2000. I literally started laughing in their faces.

Apparently Carmax can spot a scam from a mile away too.
