EJ205 Stroker motor PSA: possible random puff of oil on startup

Hey Guys,
I've been absolutely in love with my current setup since completion a few months ago: 2.2 custom stroker build, FP HTA71 turbo, and full JDM 6 speed driveline/brake swap.

However, my motor randomly puffs a little oil smoke on startup on occasion, with no association to any pattern (hot starts, cold starts, starting after being off briefly, starting after being off a while, driven hard before, driven soft before, night, day, Monday, Sunday, etc).  The heads have been rebuilt and despite leakdown, compression, breathing analysis, pcv check, and everything else, I was at a loss to the cause.

I finally discovered that some of the stroker configurations on the EJ205 will create a stroke that will actually move the oil control rings just barely to the wrist pin access holes in the cylinders.  If such a motor shuts down at JUST the right position to have a couple cylinders align just right at the bottom of the stroke, this can permit a small amount of oil to bypass the piston into the cylinder on startup, which will immediately be burnt off (similar symptoms to what can happen on oil overfill sometimes, but far more random).

Based on my research, this won't happen on all stroker configurations, but can happen on at least a couple of the CP stroker piston build configurations available.  If you're running catalytic converters, I imagine they could be poisoned rather quickly by this, but otherwise this simply should just be what it is.  I guess I may need to replace my O2 sensors more often as well, but I don't know enough about those to know for sure.  I thought I'd post this here as a heads up to anyone considering a stroker setup, that this is a potential possibility.

I'd be worried about fouling up the spark plug and having a dead cylinder, too much oil causing non spark it or ash build up... but sounds like its been running fine for this long so I guess you're  diamond

That's a good point!  I actually had to take the plugs out for testing a couple things recently, and they actually look great.  But now that you mention it, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up having to replace them every year.  I'll check them a lot.  Thanks for the heads up!!

I normally replace them every year at my "annual baby spring tune-up"  cool

Where did you get the stroker block, and why did you choose this over a 2.5 block? I'm guessing it was easier to use the 2.2l with the ej205 heads?

I had it built by outfront.

And the heads is exactly why.

I built a 2.1 stroker in my last car and it did exactly what you stated in the first post. It drove me crazy and I couldn't figure out why it was doing it. There was no consistency as to when it would do it. Thanks for the post.

No consistency, completely random, not burning oil while running, turbo is clean...

I can take 6 identical drives, turn the car off for the same matter of minutes between each, and it might happen on one startup but not the others.  Search "wrx stroker startup smoke" if you're interested in that rabbit hole of discussions.
