Hello,
I have a 2005 9-2x linear automatic with 120,000
When I'm driving at speed, take my foot off accelerator and coast, then re-apply the accelerator my car is doing a sort of jerky or stuttering thing.
It happens when I'm going uphill, not downhill
If I apply the accelerator more forcefully and car downshifts then it stops but if I apply the accelerator gradually it keeps stuttering for a few seconds.
During the stuttering I have basically no power.
This problem does not happen when I start from a stop, it's only when I'm moving.
It was happening occasionally at first (maybe once on my 30min commute) but has started happening more frequently
The check engine light just came on
I've read a few different posts and seems like DIC, spark plugs, fuel pump, etc come up
I've talked with a few friends and they think it's more likely a slipping transmission since once it downshifts it stops
Looking for any advice from other 9-2x owners who may have experienced the same issue

Why speculate when you can ask the computer? Read the DTC codes. Since the CEL came on, there will be codes stored.
From your description I really doubt it's the transmission. It sounds more like a misfire under moderate load.

replace the knock sensor
clean the maf
replace spark plugs
(reset the ECU after each change, if you dont do it all at once)
if theres still an issue:
do a seafoam treatment
replace front O2 sensor with OEM or OEM equiv (http://share.subiefiles.com/technical%2 … erence.pdf)

Why not start with reading the DTC codes associated with the CEL? Doesn't Autozone loan out (with deposit) readers? Got an Android device (smartphone/tablet)? Get a Bluetooth OBD2 reader and a free app. Cheapest one I see on Amazon is $8.

Thank you both for your tips!
I wish I had the capacity to do my own repairs, however not possible at this time so I'll be taking it to a shop later today.
Want to be sure I can speak intelligently to the problem and understand if the shop if giving me good advice (going to a new place, just moved, so makes it a little more stressful!).

The first thing they should do is read the codes. Ask them to list them for you. You can always look them up online if you have questions about what the shop is recommending. First and foremost, it's a Subaru, even though it's badged as a Saab, and Subaru expertise is not nearly as hard to find as Saab expertise.

i missed that part about the CEL. if the CEL is on, read the codes first. however, bear in mind the codes don't always correspond to a particular fix.

For posterity - here's what my issue and fix was:
I had a bad valve-cover gasket which was allowing oil to leak into all four spark plug tubes. Cylinder One was the worst and was misfiring under heavy load which was causing the hesitation/stuttering. They replaced all four spark plugs and wires, as well as both valve-cover gaskets (there are two on this car), and cleaned oil residue.
It was $815 to repair (I live in the DC area = expensive) and took just under 2 days due to shop having to order parts.

sounds about right. what an absurd cost though. Its under $100 in parts and maybe 2 hours of work if you're slow. including a drain and refill of oil
