Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

The new track is pretty amateur, surprised they couldn't come up with a better solution.  Even Fifth Gear had a better setup. Nice to have it back, hope this is a success for Amazon.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Yeah, good point.  I would agree, the new track was kinda a let down.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Did not like the first professional racing driver. The writing of his commentary and his delivery were both subpar. The writing for the show overall was meh. I'm sure it'll get better, but that was a pretty lame first episode.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Finally got around to watching the first episode since I was waiting to watch it with my brothers and parents over Thanksgiving. I enjoyed it, but I was honestly a little let down at just how closely they stuck to the Top Gear show template. I was hoping for more creativity, or just for them to remove all the 'back to the tent' bits and replace it with moar car challenges and such with the 3 of them. Didn't expect them to have a track, a 'studio' w/ an audience, a news bit, celebrity bit, allll of it. Come on guys.

Not having watched the second episode yet, my theory with the celebrity portion with them dying off was a funny way of saying 'we're not doing the celebrity appearance' portion of the show. I hope I'm right cuz I don't necessarily care for that portion. Did they do a celebrity segment in the second show?

Also... I edited the title smile

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Well second episode was less of a car show and more of a remake of that one Tom Cruise movie, Cocktail I think.

I'm guessing the BBC might have IP for having a celebrity on and having them do a lap around the track?  IDK.

I'm looking forward to them going somewhere on an adventure for an episode, those are generally my favorite episodes by far.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

What are your guys' thoughts on it now that it's done with season 1?  I still have a couple episodes left, but am disappointed in the show.  Nothing feels natural but forced.  The jokes are pretty corny, the situations are pretty staged, and the celebrity bit is just awful.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

It's better than the last few seasons of TG were IMO.  The celebrity thing is fucking stupid, but being out from under the BBC has given them more freedom.

It's gotten too big globally and will always feel scripted now, just like the last few seasons of TG were.

I just wish they would do more $500 car journeys across beautiful countries.

I liked when they used to do this too.  Their interactions were more natural too.  When they try to do it on this show, all their vehicles are just weird, and not actually designed by them.  A truck made out of meat and bones? Dumb

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

It took 4-5 episodes to get going, enjoyed it since then.  The less I compare it to TGUK, the more I enjoy it.  Even the last celebrity brain crash wasn't terrible.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

The American is terrible, being fed lines-stupid.  The celeb guest, we got the joke after 1-2 episodes...move on.  When the show is at its natural core it's that same old great feeling.  The show lives and dies on the chemistry of the three of them.  When they try too hard and things feel too forced it just comes off as lame to me.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

I stopped after the 2nd episode since the things they were doing seems really lame, repetitive and feeling of it dragging on every episode. I should try and watch again to see if that all changes or not.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

I have enjoyed the first season of the series.

It took a few episodes (as stated above), but it seemed to gel for me during the used Maserati trip. I am of a mind that season 2 will be even better. Is the old TG shtick overdone? Yes, of course - but you knew this would be the case.

Personally, the 'Celebrity Brain Crash" segment is pointless and stupid. It was pointless and stupid on the first episode and needs to be taken out back and shot. The last one where there was a running tie in (May squeegee-ing blood and guts off the glass) was good for a chuckle, but I might just lose my mind if I hear him ask, "So does that mean he's not coming on now?" again.

The American driver (Mike Skinner) occasionally elicits a chuckle, but is generally annoying. Not sure if it's really him driving or a body double, either. I already miss the always-silent Stig.

I think that Amazon is trying to appeal to too broad an audience with the show with segments not about cars. I would gladly give up some of the pointless banter and 'CBC' with a longer news segment. Hell, I'd even like a REAL interview with a celebrity, too.

CBC did have a point for the first episode.  I am pretty sure that TG legally blocked the idea of any in person celebrity interviews.  So it was a clever way of poking fun and addressing the issue.  Problem is, after doing it ONCE-MAYBE twice, we get it and the joke is dead.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

The moment Clarkson, Hammond, and May left is when the show died. They brought together what felt like life long friends poking fun at each other and having genuine adventures with cars. You liked tuning in for the cars, but also for how much crap they give each other, it was the chemistry, cars, locations and stories were what made it all fun to watch. Top Gear as it is with LeBlanc and what was Evans before he was booted feels like they've taken some car guys, introduced them if they haven't already met and said let's make a show. It feels forced, almost like you and your co-workers coming into work but never hanging outside of work with each other.

Hmmm haven't watched the first episode of the new Top Gear season yet but looking forward to it vs. last year when I was almost dreading it. ha. I hope they've gotten closer to the sweet spot with just the 3 hosts now.

I have it recorded, hopefully in the next couple days I'll get to it.

Is there a legal way to get TGUK episodes in the US?  I hear good things, but don't have the time or energy to set up torrent stuff these days.

Re: The Grand Tour - Thoughts?

Yeah I DVR it from BBC America.  It just gets to the states a couple weeks/months after it airs on the BBC in the UK.  When I was really into TG I would torrent them when they came out in the UK.

I didn't even know when TG was starting again but my DVR recorded it last weekend and I watched it yesterday.

They essentially took all the feedback on why last season sucked and changed it all to how it should be.  I am a sucker for cheaper cars in 3rd world countries, which was the majority of the episode but I enjoyed it more than any GT episode.

Huge improvement, the last episode was good fun. I hope the internet fanboys can get past bashing TG just because GT exists, it is possible for both shows to be entertaining.
