Thoughts on springs?

So... my 2005 Aero decided to snap the drivers front left spring today whilst doing 80 on the freeway  banana

That said, I will need to replace the front two springs ( if not all 4- based on prevailing wisdom and the unit of retail available)

The P.O. had Tokico D specs and these springs installed  (which are of an unidentified manufacture...they are blue and possibly 5-8 years old which is all I know)

Given this information... im looking for opinions on next steps of:

-Replace all 4?
-Recommended brand/ spring rate etc? (based on the Tokicos of this age)

Surely I am missing another factor to be analyzed and welcome any feedback.

Thanks!

Re: Thoughts on springs?

If you have the $ then I say replace springs and struts at the same time.  I'd recommend going with stock unless you love to autocross on the weekends.

Re: Thoughts on springs?

How old are the Tokicos? Still OK? Blue is typically Cobb or Cusco IIRC.

I definitely would replace all 4 springs and not just 2. Tokicos are slightly stiffer than stock, but also adjustable, so I would think that most any reputable aftermarket spring would pair well with those struts.

Re: Thoughts on springs?

definitely replace all 4 springs.
try to sell your other 3 to some unsuspecting dope on ebay for a few bucks just to get them out of here.
while you have your struts off and apart, check them for being blown (no rebound) or extremely slow rebound, and replace those that need it with an identical part (or do them in pairs L&R, or all 4)
Amazon has pretty good prices on the KYB GR2 aka "excel g", or even Monroe if you can find a good price

i don't think tokico makes springs. their struts did come in blue though
Blue springs are either Cobb or Prodrive
Orange could be STi genome or Tanabe
Red could be prodrive or H&R
black could be stock (if colored dots), or Eibach or probably others
yellow is RCE (racecomp)
White could be ebay "dna" or other crap.

Re: Thoughts on springs?

Replace all springs, struts and top hats, considering their age and the cost of having strut work done, it is not worth it to keep old parts. Get KYB Exel G struts and KYB top hats, a take off set of 04-07 STi springs can be had $70-$120
I may have two low mile take off 05 STi front springs, let me know if you are intersted in them.

Re: Thoughts on springs?

Thanks all.

The Tokicos have fairly slow rebound... definitely at least 6 years old... but the car drove great. Until... LOL
Based on the fact that the work is easy and quick i would be inclined to throw new springs on all 4 corners and call it a day.

Got the spring off this evening and cleaned up to find a logo... The springs are Espelir... seems to have gone out of business. Wonder why!

My local subie shop recommended H&R Sport springs for my needs. Thoughts? looking at the " OE Sport Spring" ... maybe i'm getting old.. but bringing the wagon a bit higher does not sound like a crazy idea.

Rodman- you got me tempted for a quick fix.

Black Friday sale.
Wagon specific usdm pink, my favorite, same spring rate as oem STi, excellent ride and very durable. I'm an old guy, I'll be 52 Sunday, I like a sport ride that won't damage my old bones.

its a solid piece of metal, no reason to buy new if the used one is identical and you can't see it anyways.

Springs fatigue, they have a limited useful life time. I can see buying used if you know how much use they have and one can estimate how much longer the part can be used in realistic terms.

Now THAT's the kind of engineering judgment that I look for when selecting parts....

Interesting comment on a thread where OP's first sentence is, "So... my 2005 Aero decided to snap the drivers front left spring today whilst doing 80 on the freeway".

Re: Thoughts on springs?

Again, I've never seen it and I've seen a lot of Subarus. Doesn't mean it hasnt happened.
I would say its a fluke if it does happen, since its not a known issue with any Subaru I've ever heard of.
