WTB: West Coast Aero under $10k

Howdy - long time Subaru owner wanting to find a nice 9-2x out here in the Western US.  I've been driving an SX4 for the last year and miss the power and fun of my 02 WRX wagon.

Looking for a 9-2X in one of the lighter colors, Silver/Gray, with the Sport and Cold Weather packages.  Moonroof, heated seats, and a manual transmission are all must have options.  I've been checking CL, Car Gurus and all the sites, but haven't found much.  Figured that I should probably try my luck here too.  Would prefer the 05 over 06, but I'm willing to look at what's out there.  I know I am being picky.  There's one on CL in OR right now, but the price seems a bit high for the miles.

Thanks!

I assume Aero/Turbo?
Why the 05 over the 06? the 06 is a superior engine and transmission in every regard pretty much

Re: WTB: West Coast Aero under $10k

Thanks for the links!

I've thought about e-mailing about the first one, but the price seems a bit high for the miles.

Second one doesn't have the cold weather package, I did e-mail about that one as soon as it was posted.

Third seems to be deleted.

Fourth is a bit too modded for what I want, and once again no cold weather package.

I know that something will pop up eventually.  I've just gotta be patient.  And convince myself not to look at Baja Turbos....   big_smile

Good luck with the search. One will come along if you search long enough, stay up to date on the normal used car sites, and are willing to take a roadtrip for your car. I looked at two before deciding on buying mine in about 3 months of actively searching.

that's because its an 06 and exceedingly rare, and its a better engine/transmission than the 05 Aero anyways.
if you can get an 06 92x over an 05, always get the 06

good luck, you'd pay $15k+ for a turbo baja in 5spd, if you can even find one

You don't know Subarus then. the 06 Aero drivetrain is better (or the same) in every regard.
i can't think of anything that the EJ20 has that could be considered a benefit, other than i guess its less complex because no AVCS?

Maybe hes a purist and likes his subaru motors to be 2.0L turbo like they are in japan even to this day. Maybe he wants to swap in the best STi engine ever (ej207) and knows that getting an 05 is the best way to do it as the harness is already a 2.0 and just needs a few wires ran. Or maybe he knows that the 255 is crap when modded and fails way more an a 205. Transmissions are virtually the same. Im not sure if the 06 92x got the actual 06 wrx trans but if so 3rd is shit in it vs 2nd in the 05 and older wrx's. The only thing really that 06 aero's have over 05's is their rarity. But these cars are rare as it is and i would rather have a 2.0 over a 2.5 turbo any day!  up

Re: WTB: West Coast Aero under $10k

EJ255 fails less than the EJ205. most EJ205s end with rod bearing issues.
a "purist"??? all the JDM EJ20s you are talking about are actually NOTHING like the USDM EJ205 and far more like the EJ255/EJ257 (avcs and all that) in wiring and mechanics versus the EJ205 which is really just a dumbed down version of the late 90s EJ20 motors.
i'm happy to educate you on the topic and discuss this with you guys, but none of you know what you're talking about... and you're being very arrogant about it.

Re: WTB: West Coast Aero under $10k

06 vs 05 differences - partial list:
Avcs vs. No avcs
More rotating mass vs. Less rotating mass.
Gas mileage differences
Power difference HP and Torque
Transmission 3.7 vs 3.9 final drive ratio
Head gaskets diff? Not sure
Pull clutch vs. Push clutch
2.0l 4 cylinder boxer vs 2.5l 4 cylinder boxer lol

I could theoretically see where different people would have different preferences as to which they like better.

My favorite subie drivetrain that ive owned and driven is the EJ207 with VF28 twin scroll, and it had a sti 5mt with 4.44 final, but it was a ver 5 so pre-avcs. So it wasnt the best motor ever made by subaru,  but it happens to be my favorite. I would assume other people have a different favorite.

This one popped up over the weekend, but no heated seats or moonroof.

But it's got a Prodrive exhaust, which is one of the first mods that I'll be doing when I finally find my perfect 9-2x.

On the 06 vs 05 argument count my vote for the 05, 2.0l turbo fan for ever. Reliability baby, that's why.

2005 satin gray metalic aero, sold.
2005 black aero, rescue project, jdm STi ver 7 drivetrain.
2008 Subaru Outback 2.5i 5 speed manual daily driver.
2006 WRX, smoked, should've never betrayed 2.0L love.

That would be awesome, but our CA smog regime doesn't take too kindly to modified cars.

Dang, adding the hope of finding a non modified car to my long list of requirements is going to make finding one even harder isn't it?

Re: WTB: West Coast Aero under $10k

Meh, stage 2 isn’t that big of a deal for CA. Just means once every 2 years you have to swap out the downpipe for a stock downpipe and flash the ECU back to stock w/ a Cobb Accessport. OR if you don’t want it stage 2, just remove the aftermarket downpipe, ‘unmarry’ the Accessport, and re-install the stock downpipe, thereby bringing the ECU back to stock.

Now if the engine is swapped to a JDM engine, or has a different turbo, non-CARB approved intake, and more, then I would stay away. As common as stage 2 mods are on these cars, I wouldn’t let that be a deterrent IF you're comfortable with the owner and can tell the car hasn't been abused. The up-pipe and catback wouldn’t be a problem with emissions testing.
