Just scored this mule last night.
Saddleless, mint condition 1983 Nishiki International
Haven't ridden since my Jamis got stolen a few years back.
Excited to throw a few dollars at it and have a solid commuter. Work is about 6 miles away.

It definitely feels better without the saddle.

I've been doing more ridig this year than last year. But gf, and kids have too many activities that coincide with times I want to ride. I did go out for a group ride last Wed with a bike shop. I was able to hang with them until we hit the hills. I just have a mental block when it comes to hills and can't climb that well. I did 28 miles and avg 16.5mph, the rest of the group did 31 miles at 17.5mph. I got my ass kicked, and haven't had time to get back on the bike yet.

^ been stalking u on teh strava.

I see that, as I do you. You put on some crazy miles in the woods. I haven't been riding in the last week, been fighting a nasty cold.

I only got into riding last year with my single speed and taking it around the local 3mi bike path. Just picked up my first geared bike after a long illustrious search. Any of you guys ride with clipless pedals? I just picked up a set of crank brothers mallet 2's and have since already become a statistic of clipless-pedal-fails (tipped over while clipped in)

Just picked up a 1986 Miyata 210 on Craigslist past Sunday.
It was in really good shape, no massive rust spots, paint is in decent shape, tires are brand new, shifts and pedals all spin perfectly. Mechanically very sound. Figure I would ride it this summer to get back in shape on the roads and come winter I could restore it with some newer parts...
Wednesday was on the trail and the rear hub locked up with no warning. Bearings and ratchet strap are all blown up in pieces on the rear hub...
The more I pulled it apart the more I realized that the bike needs everything, most of the parts are worn out and its probably been sitting for a long time. So now i get to rebuild it this summer . Going to do World rally blue paint with yellow accents all the way round.
you guys in Albany know any good local bike shops that you recommend for parts?

I recommend Bike Barn in Cohoes, Ed is a really cool guy, will fix what ever you have and not try to up sell.
Down Tube on Central Ave near Lion Heart, haven't dealt with them in a few years
CK Cycles at Central Ave and Fuller, they seem a little elitist to me and will always try to up sell. They tried to sell me a racing wheel when I needed a replacement for my hybrid commuter.

Thanks! ill be callin over and see if he has any vintage parts or replacements. I'll try to post some pics of the build but so far its just many many small pieces in bags...
Edit: found a pic from craiglist:
Not a bad bike for the price. i was amazed how fast and zippy it feels.

So long story short i decided to rebuild the bike from scratch. Repaint, and replace everything i could order parts for. I want this baby to last a lifetime.

FYI, Nashbar has a 25% off deal going today and tomorrow. Picked up another fat bike and a few components to refresh my other one.

I hate trying to get in shape on the cheap. I started spinning on my trainer in the basement this week. I wanted to use my Samsung Gear Fit 2 to track my heart rate, well that was a miserable failure. 30 minutes into the ride and it was telling me my heart rate wasn't above 90. Then at 35 minutes it jumped up to 190. So I have been trying to find something that can track my miles and HR with either Strava or S-Health. So far the only all in one I can find is Garmin which is too much money. So I am looking at a Polar HR monitor to use with S-Health, then I will probably buy the cheapest wireless bike computer that can link up with Strava. I wont have all the data in one place but at least I will have it.

There are certainly cheap options. I'd go with a band HR monitor, they're more reliable. There was recently an ANT+ band on slickdeals for $35. You could link this to a laptop or pick up a bike computer or watch. What's your budget? I did a lot of research on this lately before caving and getting a Garmin 920XT.

I would like to stay under $200. I just ordered a Polar H7 for $39, which will sync with S-health, not sure about Strava.

The H7 will work with Strava. DC Rainmaker likes this GPS: https://www.amazon.com/Polar-M450-GPS-B … 6GS4A?th=1
$150 with an H7, $133 without. Strava compatible.

Back when road biking was my thing a couple years ago used my smartphone with the stava app and the phone mounted to my stem using the quadlock
Still use that setup on my commuter bike and got the accompanying phone mount for the car. They make a universal adapter if you don't have an iphone that uses 3M VHB tape to attach to the flat back of a phone/case (that adapter is what I've used, never had an issue of it falling off the phone or mount going over big bumps/rough stuff). Have been very happy with it since it makes using turn by turn directions on the bike possible if you are lost/exploring. Phone battery life is the only issue but the strava app is better than it used to be. Never attempted to connect it to any sensors but my impression is all of that is possible.

Thanks for the help.
I ordered a Polar H7 chest strap today. So If I purchased the Polar computer along with the cadence and speed sensors, I would could have the whole compatible system that links to Strava for just above $200, which isn't going to take food off the table. (even though that would help too)
Or if I cancel the Polar and buy this Wahoo setup, it all comes in at $112

That wahoo setup is well reviewed, another bonus is you can get a prepaid android phone and use it as a wifi only super bike computer. I paid $10 each for the last two I got for my girls. $122 all in! Not sure how GPS would work without cell...

After spending more company time shopping on Amazon I went with these cadence and speed sensors + the tickr HR monitor. I know they are a little more expensive but I liked the look of these sensors better and there is nothing hanging off the chainstay, for me to be clumbsy and knock off.

The Wahoo system seems to be working perfectly. I get all the days I'm looking for and it uploads to Strava with two taps.

Just picked this up off craigslist last week. I need to get some spares and lights and dig my tools out then I can start riding to work!
