Another dumb Craigslist challenge! aka Find my nephew a first car!

I stumbled my way into helping my nephew find a car.  He's 21, refuses to learn to drive stick, and seems as mechanically adept as the dumber of my 2 dogs.  He has $300.  Luckily he also has a nice family (me and my father in law) who can probably take that to $2000.  Reliability is first priority followed by safety and fuel economy.  I couldn't give two shits about how the car looks provided it's not in my driveway every weekend needing another repair.  The craigslist in question - http://boise.craigslist.org/

For real if you find the car I end up buying, I'll send you something rando, but cool, from Amazon.

Realistically what's that 2.2L good for mileage wise?  I hesitate to buy him something >200k miles.  I'll buy it for myself all day long, but he's a noob.

Re: Another dumb Craigslist challenge! aka Find my nephew a first car!

My neighbor has one with 230k he parked from rust not motor issues. Edit: talked to him a bit more about how long the 2.2 lasts (he's owned a few) "forever", he said.

http://www.subaruhighmileageclub.com/miles300000.html

(a whole bunch in the over 200k category, one in the 400k)

No way to know for sure but 250k would be reasonable, give him about 2-3 years with average driving.

Plus worst case you know you can fix it all and it'll be solid.

LOVE this gen of Maxima.  They go forever, parts are plentiful and not an overly complicated car.

Make sure that Maxima is the SOHC 3.0 Ltr and not the DOHC. Stay away from the DOHC that year. Trust me. If it has a timing belt, buy it. Otherwise, be ready for problems!!!!

I got my 240 from that guy, he's a retiree that used to work at the factory.  Nice guy.

This one is up for auction next week.  I don't want another 240, but I kinda want this one: https://musickauction.hibid.com/lot/291 … f=lot-list

White gauges and twist spokes = SE, so it's DOHC.  I know it's a rarer motor, but I haven't heard that they're much worse than the VG30E.

The DOHC is desirable and I don't hear of them being unreliable compared to the SOHC.

From the ones I have seen, no, but I've never owned one personally.

I'm guessing they're shit, but those and PT Cruisers are definitely cheap and plentiful.

I like this, looks clean and these things are reliable, good cars.

Re: Another dumb Craigslist challenge! aka Find my nephew a first car!

Bump, no luck yet.  Had a Sentra lined up but it sold out from under me.  That Maxima and Impreza are still available, haven't had time to see them yet though.

Related, I'm going to need to help the kid stock the car with the essentials.  List right now:
-Jumper Cables
-Flashlight
-Small First Aid Kit
-Small Tool Kit
-Snow Brush/Scraper
-Fix a Flat
-Tire Pressure Gauge
-Duct Tape

Anything I'm missing?

You can always get one of those seatbelt cutters/window breakers.

He drove home a 97 Corolla CE last night.  Thanks to Mr. drewsro for the carfax hookup and to everyone that helped search.
