'05 Linear, AT, 100K, $4700? some issues...new to Subaru/Saabaru

Hi all,

Just began looking into Subaru and found a 9-2x almost by mistake.

Car will be GF's DD on hilly central KY back roads.

Good:
- brand new tires (decent ones too)
- new battery
- new brakes including rotors
- started and drove very well, no unexpected noises. Very tight.
- is owner's daily driver  (he's a tall guy and feels cramped, has another car with more room, from a relative)

Expected:
- a few dings

Of concern:
- passenger fender had been repainted before current owner bought it (~30k miles ago)
- CEL is on, code 0420, I couldn't get any reading whatsoever from O2 1x1 on Torque, but O2 1x2 was OK.  Might need new PIDs or just some education on this car.
- Don't know about timing belt, head gaskets, or recalls.

At $4700, is this way out of market range?  Hard to tell - this isn't a car that's on every corner.

GF is viewing the car today without me - anything else to have her ask about?

Thanks,

Ron

Re: '05 Linear, AT, 100K, $4700? some issues...new to Subaru/Saabaru

$4700 is way too high, I sold a very clean and 100% mechanically sound 150k Aero for $3500 a month ago. The new stuff on the car is maybe $700 in parts, and another $700 in labor, but this is maintenance - not to be added onto the asking price of the car. Worn out parts can detract from the value of a car, but maintaining a car is expected, and does not add a significant amount to the value.

The CEL is common on these cars, and can be more than just O2 sensors. Could be a big repair on the horizon - not just sensors, but new catalytic converters...

Ask about when (not IF) the timing belt was replaced. If not, it needs to be done ASAP, it's a $1000 to $1200 job at most repair shops.

I can't open the pics, but based on the description, it's very overpriced.

Thanks, krazykarguy.

Getting true market value is always a crapshoot.

Kelley Blue Book says, for 'good' condition, $1312 for trade in  eek  $2880 private party.
NADA says $3175 trade in for average condition, $5600 clean retail.
VinAudit.com says market average for '05 Linear is $6367, with 16% selling at or under $4783 and 16% selling at or over $7951.

NADA for an Impreza RS (I don't know which Impreza model the Linear lines up best to) is $6775 clean retail...a 20% premium.  (NADA for WRX is $9775, Outback is $6750)

CL in the general region ranges from an beater Linear with 220k at $1800 to a 157k Aero at $8000.

Not arguing - I value the input.  Just trying to get my head around how the owner came up with this price and what the rest of the market looks like.

Thx  embeer

Re: '05 Linear, AT, 100K, $4700? some issues...new to Subaru/Saabaru

Hey everyone,
This may be a sad.....   I am seriously thinking about moving on from my 05' 92x aero.  Arctic silver, winter package, multi-function sunroof, cruise, 2l turbo, manual.
I bought this car with 48,000 on the clock in 2012.   Today it has 135,000.  Best car i have ever owned and i am pained to even consider selling it.  The harsh reality is that i need something bigger.  (Hate to say it)  I have cared for this car as if it were a child.   Oil changes never missed.  Car is bone stock and never modified.  Never even tinted the windows. Never had a problem.    I am 36 and drove this car as if i was 70.  I figured they would bury in it. lol.    Car has two tiny dings one on the body line on the front passenger fender and one on the rear body line right near the real tail lens.   All glass is perfect and about to polish out the head lights again. New windsheild from one month ago. New tires 2 months ago. new rotors and brakes all the way around.  Major service completed at 100,000.  Timing chain and every pulley and bearing replaced.

My question is what would be a good price to ask for it?  Or at least a good starting point.  I know what it is being valued at in KBB and NADA .  We all know these are not typical.  especially survivor, bone stock, Damn near unused interior because i am an anal maniac.  Drivers seat is the only seat that saw regular wear and I used leather conditioner so there is zero scaring on the Black side panel from sliding in and out.  The only thing that is fucked is my heated seat switches.. Been looking for replacements and never can find them.  I refuse to butcher in after market switches. Hell someone stole my passenger fog light trim and it took me 9 months of hawking ebay until one came up.

So what do you guys think?  Thank you for the help in advance.

Re: '05 Linear, AT, 100K, $4700? some issues...new to Subaru/Saabaru

It's worth what someone will pay you for it. In my case, I started the bid at $4k for mine (see above), and we settled on slightly above KBB value at $3500. I'd guess you'd be somewhere slightly above this price. If you can convince someone to pay more, great!

Personally, I had three interested parties in one week for my car, all as a result of WTB posts. Putting zero effort into selling a car and having it happen within a week for full KBB value made it a no-brainer for me, especially considering the car had it's original clutch at 150k.

I wish that we were all right and that the 'rarity' of these cars would contribute to the value of it, but that clearly has not happened. Look at the values of Saab/Pontiac/Saturn/Oldsmobile/Plymouth/Suzuki vehicles that have all plummeted since those companies ceased operations in the US... The simple fact remains that the value of the car is negatively impacted by the perception that it 'cannot be serviced' or 'parts don't exist' because the manufacturer no longer sells new cars here. Those may hold true for a Saab 9-4x of a NG 9-5, but are certainly a myth for a 9-2x (at least right now).

Why are your heated seat switches screwed? Because the seats don't get hot? Or because the switches don't light up? Scenario A is likely a bad heating pad in the seat, and scenario B is a blown bulb in the switch.

Oh, and BTW, don't go spouting this off too often  biggrin:
