Re: My project Saabaru

Top tip, if you ordered the STI coilpacks but still have WRX heads (not familiar enough with your build) be sure to swap the rubber sleeves on them as the WRX ones are a bit longer.

Re: My project Saabaru

The car now has a JDM STi ver 7 motor, fortunately, many usdm parts are 100% compatible. I ordered 2002-03 wrx coil packs, they should be the correct part. Thanks for the tip, I appreciate it.

Re: My project Saabaru

As it turns out I failed to recognize that the NGK BKR7EIX plugs I installed on my swap are the same heat range as Subaru sends on the ver 7 motor from the factory. I've been using those same exact plugs for years thinking they are a step colder, and they are on the ej205. Thru Nasioc it came to my attention that I need BKR8EIX for a step colder on the ver 7 motor. I have a set coming in to install along with the new coil packs. I also realize I made the mistake of having Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank last tuning session, dope. Also taking the car to a Subaru performance shop on Long Island to get a legitimate boost and exhaust leak test. I've done the soapy water test, never found leaks but I want to be 100% sure. I also plan on taking the Deatschwerks injectors out and installing Injector Dynamics before going for another tuning session. I hope that will be the wining combination and my stars are in full alignment by then.

Re: My project Saabaru

Took advantage of the mild weather and worked on the rescue project today. I cleaned and installed the iac from the original ej205 and started it. It had a hard time but eventually fired in what seemed to me like it was running on 3 cilynders. Removed all coil packs and spark plugs, the left side plugs looked a bit dark, the right side were gasoline soaked. I gues both coil packs on the driver side failed. I checked the gaps on the new plugs and installed them and the new coil packs. Fired right up on all four cilynders and idled smoothly. I went ahead and removed the Deatschwerks 850 injectors, brand new Injector Dynamics 850 will arrive Tuesday. Once I get the car running again I'm going to Drive it to MR Performance, a local Subaru performance shop with a good reputation to have a proper boost and exhaust leak test before returning to the tuner.

Re: My project Saabaru

ID850 injectors arrived, they are beautiful, too bad they are hidden from view. They are heavy and very different bottom shape than the original counterparts. They are very wide and rely on a very small o ring to seal at the bottom. The original injectors have a big donut style seal to sit in place, I feel that is a better design. The bore were the injector sits tends to get dirty, must make sure the area is 100% clean and nothing falls inside the spray hole. Swapping fuel injectors is not a fun job on a turbo Subaru motor, installing the Injector Dynamic design injector makes the job feel more delicate. They are supposed to be much better performing than any other injector available for our cars and give the tuner better tuning control. I look forward to having a strong reliable running motor.

Re: My project Saabaru

Installed the Injector Dynamics 850cc injectors, not the easiest job. The injectors fit properly as expected, it is super critical that the lower ports are 100% clean. I started the car to make sure there are no fuel leaks, all was good. I still have to install the passenger side shield, I'm just going to cut it so it can go on easy and hold the power steering hoses. I realize they will lose functionality, they protect the fuel system in case of an accident to minimize the risk of fire. Some people just take them out all together in order to show off fancy looking fuel rails. With new plugs and coil packs, replaced iac and new fuel injectors I'm feeling good.

Re: My project Saabaru

Yeah, I just took it for a 20 mile drive, feels better than ever, very strong. I didn't get on it, just normal civilized driving on the expressway. I can feel the difference, good spark and fuel, now I'm starting to feel more confident it's going to run right when it goes on the dyno. I'm still going to take it to MR Performance for a boost and exhaust leak test just so I'm 100% certain everything is good.
Thanks.

Re: My project Saabaru

A crappy iPad photo of the ID850 injectors can't do justice to how beautiful they are, shame to hide them.

Sweet driving hopefully everything checks out and you can finally get to enjoy all of your hard work! When do you plan on bringing it back to the tuner?

Re: My project Saabaru

Spent an hour finishing up the passenger side shield install, I cut it to simplify fitting it back in place. I wanted to keep the power steering hoses held properly secured. Installed the Cobb intake, installed an aftermarket aftamaf and installed the Cobb air box. Also replaced the two hoses on the passenger side of the intercooler as one cracked in the process of removing it from the cylinder head vent and the other was kind of kinking. Next step is to bring it to MR Performance to get a proper boost and exhaust leak test. Once I'm certain there are no leaks I will arrange for the next tuning session. I'm happy its all back together under the hood, I don't think there are any leaks but shall see what happens next.

Re: My project Saabaru

Saab badges and sideskirts will all happen once the new rear bumper gets painted/installed and the entire car gets wet sanded and buffed.
Meth kit is definitely going to happen.

Plans for the sedan is to revert it to stock injectors and stock turbo and back to internal waste gate and run it on accessport 91 oct stage 2 map with an STi axleback. Also getting it back up with struts and STi springs for a more civilized daily driver utility so I can also drive it to the Midwest when I feel like not driving the Outback. It will all slowly happen as the weather warms up.

Re: My project Saabaru

Turns out the spare ver 8 long block I had and sold was not all Nagoya said it was. As it turns out it had a broken cam shaft and bent intake valves. I'm fighting it out with them at the moment thru my Discover card to get them to cover the repair cost.

Also, decided to get rescue project e tuned from Stephen at IA Performance, not returning to The Shop in CT.
