OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

I need a vf39 to swap into my 92x, I'm seeing alot of them brand new on ebay for 3-400 bucks. Which is what used ones go for.. just wondering why. Alot of them say IHI as well, idk what that means. Are these cheap turbos cheap for a reason? I don't kno how to tell if it's factory off the STI or not.
Here's an example:

One of them I looked up:

Brand:
fasturbo2015

So has to be a knockoff because of BRAND listed and it say OE Spec.  Could be taking a chance on reliability.  Better chance of getting one though.

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

Any brand new vf39 or the like on ebay will either be a knock off or a cheap rebuild.

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

this is what an OEM vf39 looks like. if it doesn't look exactly like that (with the IHI casting and "VF39" engraved) then its not OEM, its just a shitty ebay knockoff
a NEW vf39 will be about $1100. a good used VF39 will be ~$400

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

You will find all of them have that crack, everybody says it is not a factor, the turbo will still function properly.

2005 black aero, rescue project, jdm EJ205 avcs.
2005 desert silver aero, traded.

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

not a big deal, most VF39 will have it, less so on the newer ones but still will be occasionally found

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

Just bought a vf39. Now I'm reading a vf34 will get you way more power, is that true? Doesn't matter I'm not changing my mind now it's too late, I already bought it. I'm just curious
I fear I'm wasting alot of money on minimal gains when I could have gotten a vf34. Is it something I can upgrade to later on without having to change the fuel pump and injectors for a second time?

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

VF34 is a ball bearing turbo vs most of the other VF turbos which are thrust/journal bearing.
theoretically this means it will spool quicker, but not a ton.
However, it doesn't matter much if you don't have a tune to support it.
in fact, running a VF34 without a tune might do more harm than good
unless you were planning on doing turbo upgrades... in which case your money would probably be better spent on a bigger turbo like a TD06 or a Garrett or something else plus other supporting mods

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

you can do anything you want if you're going to get it pro tuned.
it would be recommended to upgrade the fuel pump (walbro, aem, and deatschworks all make upgraded ones) and the injectors (top feed: oem dark blue sti ones, or oem jdm pink ones, they are basically the same).
if you had an 06 wrx it would already have the same dark blue injectors as the sti, but he ej205 has lower flow light blue ones.

its really more about how much power you want to make and what your budget is. that's the only way to say what you could/should do

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

Yea all I'm planning is the vf39 upgrade right now. Obviously I'd like as much power as possible but not looking to spend a ton up front. I'll upgrade it over time if I can

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

I've noticed a huge influx of "new" subaru injectors on eBay for pretty cheap. I would avoid them and get good used ones
Also note that listing says they don't come with o-rings and they're about $25 for the 3 o-rings per injector
However if you get some used ones cleaned and flow tested by WitchHunter for example, they will include new prints.
Take what you want from that

Re: OEM vs aftermarket VF39?

What do the injectors and fuel pump go for? So I know if I'm paying too much
