Re: Clutch Exedy KSB04 vs OEM Subaru. Any thoughts?

Get the OE Subaru parts. I've used both, I was warned about the Exedy being inferior, noisy... but I gave it a shot. No surprise I had noisy decel, replaced it with parts from one of the online Subaru dealers and all my issues went away. OE isn't too much more from a dealer like Annapolis.

Hello snowphun. Thanks for the reply. I'll go ahead and do that. Do you have a specific website that you use to buy your OE parts? Thanks for the help.

Uh...  is that what's wrong with my car?  Does it sound like child doing an impression of a cat that's in turn doing an impression of Wario from mariokart?

Exedy makes the OEM clutches. If the KSB04 is the correct one for your car, get that, Amazon has the best price usually. The OEM one will be identical and cost twice as much

@theleveler

I've read somewhere online that that noise should only happen if you upgrade to the Stage 1 Exedy clutch, but not so much to the regular Exedy clutch replacement. Perhaps someone in this community can verify?

Correct.

Absolutely incorrect. Subaru parts are not the same as the Exedy OEM kits on the market, never have been.

I like Annapolis, Jackie is active on NASIOC and quick to respond. https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showth … ?t=2629549 But once you have part numbers a quick Google search will find you a number of "Subaru online genuine parts" resellers, and often Amazon is in the same ballpark.

The stage 1 clutch is what I have

Re: Clutch Exedy KSB04 vs OEM Subaru. Any thoughts?

I recently installed an OE Exedy clutch a little less than 1.8k miles ago and all this time I was convinced that the mechanic who performed the job didn't do it correctly because the clutch still felt slippery. I even considered redoing my clutch for the second time just to have a peace of mind. However, I drove my car today and after hitting around 1.9k miles the clutch felt very responsive all of sudden. I wanted to make sure that the feeling wasn't just in my head, so I drove it hard and it felt sticky and responsive. I went home to do some research on this online and newbly found out that the clutch needs to be broken in for at least ~1000-2000 miles! Geez, and to think that I almost redid my freaking clutch! There's one lesson learned for me.

How pedantic are we being though?
They are the same, Subaru just orders up batches of OEM-branded ones from Exedy.
If the Exedy  KSB04 is the correct part for the 02-05 WRX (i don't want to look it up right now), it will be the same as the OEM one.

Nothing pedantic about it. Hold the parts next to each other, they are not the same.

I've had both in my hands, they are visibly different, the disk in particular. Different details on the TO bearing. They are not the same parts. A couple examples of people discussing differences:

https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showth … ?t=2470508

Believe what you want, I've used both in the same car and had better results with the OEM parts.

in that link the "double spring" one is OEM and the single spring one is the Organic Stage 1 disc (FJD024U). so that is a misquote by the person in that thread.

again, the "Exedy Stage 1" is not the same as the OEM replacement kit.

I looked up some stuff.
For an 05 Aero or 02-05 WRX, the Exedy OEM replacement kit is KSB03
This kit is $228 on Amazon and would be the same as buying (subaru part numbers)
30100AA883 - clutch disc $170
30210AA630 - pressure plate $200
30502AA130 - release bearing $146
806212020 - pilot bearing $12
$528 retail (yes it would be cheaper at wholesale or from any of the OEM online retailers)

for 06 Aero (06+ WRX) the Exedy OEM kit is FJK1001 for $290 on amazon or:
30100AA883 - clutch disc $170
30210AA690 - pressure plate $178
30502AA120 - release bearing $53
806212020 - pilot bearing $12
total of $413 retail and oddly probably quite close the price of the Exedy kit if priced at wholesale
I priced it at the best discount i could find for OEM parts and it was $284... plus shipping
