New 9-2x owner here...rear suspension noise over bumps.

So I recently purchased my saabaru and noticed a rattling over bumps. From my past experience I def need a control arm or two on front side passenger. In addition, when I hit a solid bump the rear passenger suspension makes a similar rattle but it also feels as if that back corner isn't attached to the rest of the vehicle. Does this sound like a sway bar problem or some linkage in the suspension, possibly the strut itself? I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have worked on various vehicles, haven't had an opportunity to take a look underneath. Just trying to get an idea what to look for...TIA

Re: New 9-2x owner here...rear suspension noise over bumps.

My aftermarket sway bar made a fair amount of racket before I replaced it with another new aftermarket sway after I had some fitment concerns when installing aftermarket lateral links. It would rattle over bumps and also squeak over low speed bumps due to the poly bushings. The rattle was from my endlinks for the sway bar the best I could tell. The previous owner installed them with bolts that weren't the proper size so there was some play. When I installed the new sway bar I used proper sized bolts to prevent that issue.

If it has aftermarket endlinks/sway bar/sway bar mounts in the rear (which is a common mod on saabarus) I would check those, tighten, and grease where applicable.

It could possibly be the strut as well as those can clunk when worn as well. I didn't experience that problem with my struts though.

Disconnect the rear swaybar (easy enough to do) if the noise goes away you've got worn endlinks or bushings that mount the bar to the chassis.  My bushings were making a squeaky racket which was resolved with lithium grease.

The front only has one control arm per side, why do you think it is worn?

Re: New 9-2x owner here...rear suspension noise over bumps.

I believe it to be worn because of the rattle over bumps. I had a vw passat which made same noise and it ended up being the upper control arms. Perhaps its the struts. Both front and rear passenger rattle over bumps. The rear just seems to be way worse almost as if it is getting pulled to the rear of the car after hitting a large bump. I tend to avoid large bumps/holes etc. but here in western new york the roads are like driving on the moon.

Well I was able to get under there and didn't see or feel any real issues. It literally feels like that rear passenger side is going to get ripped off over a large bump. Detached the swaybar link still have the noise feeling over large bumps. Still getting the clunking noise. I wonder if it's a bushing issue...

I've had a few 200k+ mile WRXs with stock bushings, no noises. I would replace the struts unless you know they are relatively new. Rear strut tops are not usually a wear item. Konis with stock springs makes for a great combo.

Rear struts can clunk as they get hung on rebound and then break free and rebound suddenly.

Did some research on the nasioc forums. Def going to replace the rear struts, read about a "skip" like feeling while hitting bumps and pretty much describes what I'm experiencing. I'll post back to let you know.

Break out a flashlight and check your strut towers (the metal housing over the struts) from the wheel well. Cross your fingers that they are still solid.
