Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

I am thinking of getting a new mountain bike. The local shop has a left over '15 KHS Tempe. It was originally $1100, but on sale now for $999. I rode the XL he had in the shop and it was too big. I stopped in yesterday and he told me he picked up a few L frames and he would let it go for $899. Should I jump on this? I don't know much about KHS.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Anybody have a cyclocross style bike they are looking to get rid of?  Need something to commute on rough roads and feel a road bike wouldn't handle the roads by me.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

So my 07 Giant Rincon, though running relatively well, needs some love before it becomes my summer commuter.  I have been lax with maintenance to say the least.  What would you replace?  Chain obviously, freewheel?  Crank?  Derailleur and brake cables plus lube on all bearings.  What else?

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

at ten years old, chain, cassette, middle chain ring, all cables and housing, true the wheels, new tires, maybe new brake pads, and hub lube if needed.

mine needs to come out of hibernation.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Tires are pretty fresh and pads still have a good deal of life and bite in them.  I'm debating just getting a new bike but I think all of those can be done for under $100.  Not exactly top of the line components on this one but it's a runner, does the commuting job well.

ETA: Current Amazon list:

I think I might swap the fork too, the Suntour suspension fork is worn out.  Any recommendations?  I'd love a lockout, but I'd love more to stay a good bit under $100.  Direct replacement looks to be ~$70, with a nicer Rock Shox pushing towards $120ish.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

The mid grade Sram drivetrain stuff is a good choice for most folks I think.

do you have the tools to replace the cassette?  If not, I can fly out and do it. ha ha.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

I do have tools and this will be road only for now.  Entry level Shimano across the board.  I assume you mean X4/X5 for SRAM?  Haven't really priced that out.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

I didn't recall it being aligned with a specific part of their line up.  I probably was looking more at price than anything - whatever level the old PC-91 chains used to be?

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Most replacement done; cassette, chain, bottom bracket, crank, brake lever/shifter assembly, and cables.  Lubed up the rear hub while it was off and found that something in there is bent, there's a noticeable wobble on the cassette.  I'll live with it, don't want to put too much money in a 10 year old bike that will see pavement for the rest of its days.  The derailleur adjustment was also a PITA, the components are in the Shimano Tourney groupset and thus, pretty terrible.  However they still work for the time being so no replacement yet.  Still need to "rebuild" (i.e. disassemble, clean, grease, reassemble) the fork and grease up the headset, then it should be good for the summer.

Starting to look hard at the Bikes Direct/Bike Island hardtails.  My SS 29er just sits so it'll probably be replaced.  Might sell the cheapo fattie and upgrade that as well, I'm pushing 600 miles on it this year and I like it enough that it's probably worth getting a bit better of a rig.

To end this rambling, anyone have any instructions on adjusting hydraulic discs?  The front on my FS Specialized is rubbing a good bit.

EDIT - Got on a wild hare this morning and bought a Fantom29 Comp.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Geoff,
I just bought a Domahidy Designs Ti Hardtail frame. Still have not built it up, but I raced his steel HT last summer for a few races. Sweet frame if you are looking for something highend.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Your budget and mine are painfully different smile.  Nice setup though, looks like that will be a solid performer.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Yeah, it is going to be my XC race bike. It should be a blast on the singletrack.

Re: Mountain Bike discussion time.

Any of you guys have a cheap 29'er wheelset that you're willing to sell? Need it for my single speed bike as a back-up set.
