Re: Dashcam Thread

Well to update, I finally bit the bullet and got a dashcam on Cyber Monday.

Here is what I went with it was $10 cheaper yesterday though: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SK … &psc=1

I'll let you guys know what I think about it after I get it up and running.

I bought one of the clones of that for my roommate last year for Christmas. It's worked well for her.

Re: Dashcam Thread

Yeah it seemed to be a good balance of price, quality, ease of use, and discreetness.  We shall see.

Re: Dashcam Thread

I'm looking to possibly buy two cameras (one for the front and one for the rear). Any suggestions? I'd like them to be discreet so they don't distract while driving.

Re: Dashcam Thread

Well I made the rookie mistake of not getting a Micro SD card with it, so that delayed me a few days.  But I braved the 10F wind chill we got going on right now and got her installed tonight.

Besides needing to clean the window of my finger prints from installing, I'm really happy with the quality of the video, esp. for $70 total with the SD card.  With the 32GB card I got it should hold about 5 hours of video before writing over itself.

Here is a clip from my first drive with it:

Re: Dashcam Thread

Those of you who have installed a dashcam, what fuse did you use to tap in to? I got a dash cam that I plan on installing this weekend after receiving the hardwire kit, microSD card and add-a-fuse tap. I found this thread very useful and was just planning on following his steps and using the ACC fuse to tap into. All good? And what amp fuse should I use? His thread says 2A is fine? Will post some video after I get it installed

Re: Dashcam Thread

I was lazy and spliced it into the dome light wiring, which I found out was always hot, so I had to unplug my camera every time.  I thought about just splicing it into the sunroof wiring.

Re: Dashcam Thread

There is a fuse I can't remember which that people use on the FoST, I'm temporarily using the cigarette outlet for power right now.

Can't decide if I want to get rid of this car or not.

Got it - I don't recall if my dashcam has a parking mode or not. I don't think so so I'll be using a fuse that comes on when the key turned and car is on. Seems straightforward enough to run the wire under the headliner and A-pillar to the fuse box - at least easier than the boost gauge install.

2A or 5A OK for the fuse?

Yea mine came with the cigarette lighter power cord but it's a little ugly having that always open and the connection sticking out so I'll be hardwiring.

Buy that stancenation Mustang from Drew! ha

Re: Dashcam Thread

Ha idk after driving the Miata, I'm thinking about getting something like it where I can just have fun on normal roads without the threat of jail time.

I can't believe I'm between a Miata/Fiata and a 5.0 Mustang right now, but that's where I'm at haha.

Re: Dashcam Thread

Anker Roav dashcam just came out and you can get it for $36 off using the code KINJACAM.  I just ordered one to try out.  For $64 you can't really go wrong.

Edit: Code expired now

I was lazy too; just tapped the cig lighter with a long splitter and ran wires into the glove box.  I wanted to hard wire my GPS as well.

On the Element, I'm going to take my time...there's a power tap in the back and the front one is on the pass. side, I'll probably run fused USB connections and go a little more custom/stealth than the janky set of wires in the glove box of the  92x

Re: Dashcam Thread

The way my new Anker Roav connects is through a Micro-USB to USB, which then connects to a 2 USB cigarette lighter charger.  My GTI has a USB already in front of the shifter, but I use that for my phone and Apple CarPlay.  Otherwise there is a 12v socket on the center console (no, too obvious), one is the arm rest storage (hidden, but too difficult to get to) or in the trunk.  I ended up using the trunk and ran the cord along the edge of the headliner all the way back.  So far so good.

I've had the dash cam in for awhile now. Still need to get around to taking some video off to upload vid or screen cap here. I was able to hardwire it pretty easily using an add-a-fuse.
