I have a 2005 saab 9-2x aero I haven't had the car for very long and am not very mechanically inclined so I am looking for advice. The car started randomly smoking after I turn off the car sometimes there is also a smell of burning. thanks in advance

Could be a lot of things. Does it smell sweet? Does it do it every drive?
My first guess would be coolant from a leaky radiator, because that happens to every 9-2x eventually.
Second guess would be oil from a gasket seeping onto the headers or something.

it smells like oil. I know I need a valve cover gasket would that cause it? and no it doesn't do it every drive

If there is enough oil seeping out of them it definitely could. You should be able to see the oil on the motor, I'd look around the headers.

It's probably 99.9% that it's your passenger side valve cover leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold where it meets the up pipe. Not terribly difficult to do with hand tools in your driveway.
Or your passenger side cv boot ripped and it's throwing grease all over your exhaust.

The axle grease on the DP reeks though, I feel like that one is obvious. I'm going with valve cover gaskets.

its either valve covers leaking oil, head gaskets leaking oil and coolant, or power steering leaking ATF. all will eventually collect on the crossmember and drip onto the exhaust.
axle boot grease would not really create smoke since it is not liquid enough (though you could probably smell it)

it certainly smoked on my car. Every stop would be a huge veil of acrid smoke.

Axle boot grease will smoke if it gets on a non-oem down pipe. Time to look under the car and verify what is leaking.

Check under the hood and you'll notice a slight gloss on parts that are caked in oil. That's the starting point. I just replaced the hoses for the PCV returns and it's stopped the leaking. I got lucky because if it's the head gaskets, which is very likely, then it's a slowly ticking time bomb unless you get that done.

Mine smokes because the PS line has been leaking and drips down tot eh hot exhaust.

Best answer, I had the same problem. So I got under the car and noticed the CV boot is ripped and grease is caked on my down pipe, but I also have an oil leak that looks like it's coming from above my oil filter
