Odb2 port - linear

Hi all,

Recently i got a CEL after some exhaust work.

I had a custom exhaust shop fab me up a mid pipe and muffler (pretty much a cat back). Afterward i got that CEL. I called the shop and they said to bring it by and they would scan it. My el cheapo Bluetooth odb2 scanner dongle showed me a P0031 code. I looked it up and it seems to point to the front o2 sensor. I inspected the front o2 sensor wiring and it seemed like it was ok. I told the shop that i got the code and they suggested i reset the codes and let them know if it comes back. I tried to hook up my Bluetooth dongle again but it wouldn't connect to the ecu. I figured it was due to a crappy odb2 dongle (i think i paid like $10 on eBay).

Anyways...a buddy at work lent me his scan tool to confirm that its a p0031 and to reset the code to see if it returns. I cant get this scanner to connect now either. I inspected the odb2 port but it seems ok...i pulled it out and confirmed that all five wires are going to pins.

Any ideas as to why i cant get either scanner to connect? Im worried that my crappy Bluetooth dongle messed this up. I'd really like to know the cause of the CEL before i take it back to the exhaust shop. Im worried i wont pass emissions if odb port is messed up. hmm

Thanks all

Re: Odb2 port - linear

Check to make sure the lighter fuse is not blown. That circuit often times also provides power to the obdII port. Without power there, you will get nothing.

Re: Odb2 port - linear

If it's lit up, then it is working. That's not your problem. Current drawn will not affect the port.

Re: Odb2 port - linear

The BT dongles are pretty iffy, and maybe your friends code reader is acting up. Hit an Autozone/PepBoys/AAP... and have them try their scanner. Easier than tearing the car apart.

Re: Odb2 port - linear

Well i went to advanced auto parts  and borrowed their scanner....read the ecu fine so im going to say that both the Bluetooth dongle and my coworkers scanner are just not good...

It showed a P0031 code like i suspected....I cleared the codes, but it came back almost immediately

P0031 is showing to be a front o2 sensor...i have an 05 linear...the thought of dropping the cat to swap the sensor on a rusty Vermont car in my driveway in the winter isn't very exciting ....if you guys think there's anything i else I should check let me know....otherwise im going to reach out to the exhaust shop and get their advice......btw should i have them swap both front and rear o2 sensors while they are in there?

Re: Odb2 port - linear

If you need to buy more time there's a way to turn off those codes in the ECU with a tactrix. Unfortunately don't have mine handy otherwise would offer to help out with it, but maybe someone else on a subaru forum can help you out?

Re: Odb2 port - linear

Yes, you can absolutely just buy one from their site or find one used. Depending on how tech-savvy you are, getting the ecuflash software installed on a laptop can take a little bit of time with the different drivers, but basically once you have that you should be able to pull your current ECU map, toggle the flag to disable any ECU code you want, and reflash the ECU so it won't show a CEL for it. Depending on your time-frame if you have a couple weeks to wait should have my car and tactrix back to help out.
Re-read your post--that is not what you want long-term for the front o2 sensor since that one being faulty will adversely affect things, but for the rear one (P0420) you should be able to disable that with no adverse issues so you won't have to deal with replacing that.
For you, the cost of buying the tactrix and setting up the software on a laptop might not be worth the cost/effort compared to just getting the front o2 replaced. Then could get the code for the rear o2 turned off some other time by anyone with a tactrix.

Re: Odb2 port - linear

Well I had the exhaust shop swap the o2 sensor and the code is gone after they cleared it...should be ready to go for an inspection sticker....also had them install some UEL headers and it sounds real good smile

update: got my sticker smile ...thanks to all for the tips
