I checked my hood today and found that my alternator belt is breaking. The frustrating thing is that I literally just replaced it a little less than 100 miles ago -- this can't be possible! My mechanic used the Dayco brand. I initially didn't mind too much about it because they were just the drive belts. But I guess I'm wrong.. I'm really hoping that the reason is because of the belt brand, but even so, I find it hard to believe that it broke in less than 100 miles!? I called my mechanic immediately and he's going to change everything and do the labor for free. Hopefully I find out what went wrong..

I always trusted Dayco belts back when I had a shop. That was a long time ago and perhaps things have changed, but I'm more inclined to suspect something damaged the belt.

I'm really hoping that it's not. I don't think I know enough to even contrive up other possibilities that could have caused the problem.. Do you have any thoughts? I want to post photos of it, but I don't know how to do it on this forum.

Could it be the alternator mounts/bushings (if it even has bushings) are worn out, causing the alternator pulley to run cockeyed, which then causes the belt to wear faster? Just spitballing here

Dayco makes great belts. I think you have another problem.

Yeah as it turns out the belt was really close to the bolt, which caused it to strip. On top of that, I think my mechanic accidentally got the wrong size and installed that. He ended up changing it with Napa belts. For the power steering belt, it was green.
