How do I make a key duplicate?

Hello everyone. So I'd like to make an emergency duplicate key but I've gone to two locksmiths and no luck. One said they didn't carry that key and the other looked it up in a book and it said it was a "chip key" meaning they can make a key that'll open the doors but it won't start the car. He also said that only a dealer can make that key but there's no more Saab dealer? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: How do I make a key duplicate?

This must be a 2006 car?  I was able to get chip keys cut and programmed at a local locksmith, some have much more sophisticated gear so you may want to try calling a few more. Otherwise I would go to your local Subaru dealer (instead of calling) and show them the key. It's Subaru stuff even if it has Saab imprinted on it.

We'll both places I went to looked pretty high end. One services south beach so I assume they deal with a lot of exotic cars and way more complex keys than mine but I think the issue there was that they're too "by the books". Mine is an 05 btw and the Subaru guy I spoke with was in parts and support and he knew exactly what a 9-2x was but he said that they ship the keys out and there's a chance Subaru would do it but he says it's very unlikely. He said once they see it's not Subaru they just send it back. I guess someone's tried before.

Re: How do I make a key duplicate?

I had a Subaru dealer make me a key with no issue at all. I have my original key tag and they looked up the code and cut it for me in 10 minutes. I'd say try another Subaru dealer. They gave me the usual crap "can't guarantee this will work/these parts will fit/blah blah blah" but of course it worked perfectly, as it always does.

As far as the chip part goes, I have an '06 so there's an immobilizer chip in the key. I cut my chip out of my valet key and put it into the new key. If I didn't have that, I'm pretty sure they could have given me one with the key since I had the original key tag. Since you have an '05 though, I don't think there is a chip to worry about.
